Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 9th April 2023

Huge congratulations to Nire/Tourneena on claiming the Winter League title for 2023 on Sunday 2nd April where they overcame a gallant an Rinn team who were going for two in a row, but it wasn’t to be. We would like to say well done to all the teams that took part over the winter, to the teams that made the quarter and semi-final stages and to all team Captains for the way they supported their fellow team members during the league. As with every year it was a huge success but the league doesn’t run so smoothly without serious work and with that in mind we have to thank Irene and Brian for all their work checking cards, uploading the scores, and helping and informing the Captains throughout the 15 weeks of the league. To the Management and green keeping staff, we say a big thank you for keeping the course in tip top condition all year round but especially during the winter months. Following a lovely meal served by the wonderful staff in the Goldcoast Hotel our presentation to the winners took place in the Dug-out bar.  Our Captain Michael Wall assisted by President Rafael Alvarez got things under way.  He spoke of the huge success of the league and he then called on our sponsor John White to say a few words.  He thanked all who took part in the league and helped to make it such a success.  He then went on to make the presentation to the Captain of the runners up team An Rinn, Darren O Droma, followed by the Captain of the winners of the league section Dungarvan, Brian O’Connor and then Captain John Hallinan of the overall winners for 2023 Nire/Tourneena. The winners of the individual scores for the league were as follows 1st Adam O Riordan 420pts, 2nd Tony Fitzgerald 416pts, 3rd Liam Browne 405pts, Gross Micheal White 393pts, 4th Jimmy O Dwyer 401pts, Joint 5th Jim Harty and John D Walsh 400pts each.  Well done to all involved.

We are pleased to announce that John White, for the 9th season, will sponsor the Winter League again. We as a club are very grateful to John for his continued sponsorship of the league and all the work he does in the club.

Practice for the Purcell and Mixed are ongoing now. First round of the Pierce Purcell will be played away to Thurles on Sunday 16th April and the first outing for the Mixed is Sunday 23rd April away to Williamstown. Golf Ireland have made changes to the areas for inter club competitions. We now have just have a Munster East and West divide which means longer traveling for away teams. It may affect our Golfer of the year competitions as no dates have been finalized.

The Goldcoast Handicap Committee met last week to review scoring during the winter period. Members have been informed by email where an adjustment has been deemed appropriate.

A fee of €5 is to be paid when playing non-competitive general play rounds that are returned for handicap purposes. Members cannot play handicap counting general play rounds on competition days. There is no charge for members playing initial rounds to obtain a club handicap or playing leisurely social golf.

The order of merit winner will now be awarded the car park space previously given to the scratch match play winner. The new tee box on the 12th will be ready for the Captain’s Prize while the tee box on the 17th is nearing completion. The new score cards and index changes will be rolled out as soon as summer rules come in to play. Relief will be allowed for all stakes trees.

Our Facebook page is now up and running which will help to promote the club to members and visitors alike. Contact the kiosk for details on the page or if you have photos or other items that you want included on the page. Well done to Leanne Bumster on taking on the role assisted by Neil Dermody.

We had a very healthy turnout again on Thursday as we played in glorious sunshine and very dry underfoot conditions. The winter tees have been removed so we reverted back to normal reds which reflected the scoring on the day, results are posted above!!

The excitement of last week continued with a little celebration of the Hole In One. Margaret was presented with a framed photo of the event and a fabulous cake which we all enjoyed with the coffee.

This week Anne pulled out all the stops when she surprised us all with a selection of chocolate bunnies and eggs, everyone had a prize going home!! The attention to detail each week is phenomenal as she presents the most beautiful and useful prizes all wrapped awaiting the reaction of the recipient!!

The midweek golf has proved to be very advantageous in keeping the swing active and playing other competitions in conjunction with the competition of the day!! Many thanks to Anne for continuing to organise the event with presentation of the most wonderful prizes each week!!

Ladies, we have a new consignment of club crested polo shirts in a range of trendy colours and club crested gilets now in stock. Our broad range of club clothing in mix and

match colours look very smart and make wonderful and useful gifts and are available from the kiosk!!

The team members are resuming golf lessons again after a break due to the inclement conditions with the PRO which is proving to be a great success. Onwards and Upwards for our teams!! Any updates in relation to above will be posted on the WhatsApp group.

If you have any used or unwanted golf balls that you wish to dispose of, please drop them into bucket in ladies locker room. These will be used for practice and lessons for our Inter Club teams, many thanks to those who have added to the bucket. Much appreciated!!

Practice is underway for their upcoming match on Sunday 23rd April in Williamstown taking on the home team. Wishing our pairings the very best of Gold Coast luck on the day under the guidance of team managers John and Aisling. Support on the day would be appreciated!!

Our Handicap secretary and committee met to discuss the input from the ladies in accordance to their handicaps. A review will be on-going throughout the year in relation to above decision.

Ladies, if you had ever thought of taking up golf, now is the time to do it, our Lady Captain Rosie and any committee member would be delighted to take out potential members and showcase our beautiful course and unrivalled scenery!! There are great deals on offer for new members and beginners including tuition, please contact our Director of Golf Irene or Brian in the kiosk on 058 44055 for more information.
