JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL 2024
This event took place on Wednesday 10th July 2024 in the home of golf at the Goldcoast Golf Club. Things got under way with an early start and with 32 holes facing members the car park was filling from 8 30am onwards with photos being taken and players being directed to their tee boxes for a shot gun start at 9am. In the early morning breeze, on a beautiful sunny day the smell of the Barbecue was received with much delight from players as they reached the 11th green. We thank Bob O’Brien’s family, namely his wife and daughter who cooked the burgers and sausages all day and which were kindly supplied as always by Micheal Wall and other ingredients by John White. The food trail continued to the 18th where the wonderful ladies from the club had tea/coffee, sandwiches and lovely cream cakes on offer. We say a big thank you to all the ladies involved. In the late evening, we retired to the Hotel for a sit-down meal and presentation of prizes. The organiser of the event Bob O’Brien spoke of its success over the last 3 years and the money that has been raised for the palliative care unit in Dungarvan Community Hospital. He thanked his hard working team for all their help during the day Maurice Fennell, John White, Michael Wall and Johnny Hughes. He thanked Mark Knowles and his team at the Hotel for the beautiful meal and wonderful service as always and Mark Linehan and his team including Rob and the green keeping staff. He then introduced Sean McGrath who spoke on behalf of the McGrath family and of course his late father John who was the man behind this little gem of a course that we call home today. We heard from Paula French from Dungarvan Community Hospital who thanked the members for their continued supported and explained where the funding raised will be going this year. It’s days like this that make you proud to be a member of such a great club as the Goldcoast Golf Club, where lifetime friends are made.
The winners on the day were as follows:

CARTON CUP
Our Carton cup team under the management of Breda V and Anne met Castlecomer on Fri for the return leg of the tournament.
Our ladies played great golf, going to the wire with most matches, resulting in a playoff to secure a win. We were now on equal footing and a second playoff had to commence with the designated players to secure the overall result.
Aine was our lady who had won her own match on the 8th and now in the playoff again for the 3rd time played super golf up the first landing the ball beautifully on the green. Both were in the same position on the green and our opponent sank a long downhill putt to claim the win.
Congratulations and well done to our girls who have played great golf in keeping us in the tournament for so long and gave us many hours of nail-biting entertainment! We would like to thank everyone involved from players, caddies, managers and especially our own members whose support was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Onwards and upwards for next year.
A word of thanks to the ladies from Castlecomer who gave us a very friendly game and were wonderful company. We wish them the very best of luck in their next leg, and hope they go all the way to Carton House.
GOLD COASTERS
Weather permitting, we will resume our weekly golf next Thursday, if not we will meet for cuppa and chat. Updates will be posted on our group.
