Goldcoast Gc Notes 17th Sept 2018

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 17th September 2018:

Changing Faces at the Goldcoast:

Last Friday Brendan O’Brien(aka Bob) retired after almost 17 years.

Members, friends and family gathered in the members bar last Friday evening for an informal gathering to mark his retirement.

On the night John McGrath thanked Brendan for his dedicated and loyal service to the club and for the efficient and competent way he ran the kiosk

Brendan takes with him best wishes from all our members and friends far and wide, thanks for the countless great memories, gags, jokes and friendships

Not to forget the many fundraising golf events that he dreamt up and successfully organised, many charities are the huge beneficiaries from his work

Stepping into Brendan’s shoes will be Irene Lynch, presently secretary/manager at Dungarvan Golf Club. Irene will be taking up her new role in a month or so and brings with her almost 20 years experience at both Mallow and Dungarvan Golf Clubs

Also arriving will be Aaron Crotty from Ring who has experience from both local neighbouring clubs as well as spending time on golf courses in the States

On behalf of all here, we would like to wish them both the very best in their new positions here in the Gold Coast. We know that the members here will make them welcome and give them all the support that they need in finding their feet. Exciting times at the Goldcoast

The idea behind it is have an occasion on the course which will bring back memories of the many members who have died over the years and whom we would have played golf with down through the years. We have had some wonderful characters as members here in the Gold Coast and we honour some of them with competitions named after them. Next Sunday is a day to remember all the members who have passed on to their eternal rewards.

Four players are left in contention for the Golfer of the Year 2018. Brian O’Connor leads by 7 pts going into the final event of the year. Ger Bagge, Brian Dunbar and Micheal White would have to win next Sunday, but could still be denied if Brian O’Connor finishes with 8 shots of the winner. John Walsh would need to have a very good score with Brian having a bad day to win. All will be revealed next weekend.

Gold Coast Golf Notes 27th August

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 27th August 2018:

Mick Ahern R.I.P.

What a shock went thru the Club on Tuesday morning when news of the sudden death of Mick Ahern became known. Mick had had health problems a few months ago but had recovered very well and on Saturday last he played in the President’s Scramble and was in great form. A gentle giant of a man from Kerry he came to Waterford with two All Ireland medals, one in senior and one in minor. A very popular club man here in the Gold Coast, he will be deeply missed by his playing partners, Michael, Nicholas, Darren, Tomas and Pa and all the members of the club. The club was well represented at Mick’s funeral with a very large number of members forming a ‘Guard of Honour’. To Mick’s wife Margaret, daughters Caloline and Rachel and son Michael we offer our deepest sympathy. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.

President’s Prize:

Brian Dunbar is the winner of the second major of the year following a pulsating contest which saw Brian snatch victory with a single point to spare over Roy Ware. It was close enough going into the second round on Sunday morning and with tough conditions prevailing nobody was willing to predict who the winner would be. Tom White posted a score of 40 points to take an early lead and many thought this would prevail, but Pa Queally and then Royco with a great score of 41 overtook the Dunhill man before another Dunhill resident in the final group on the course added a 39 to his 1st round score of 38 pts to secure the President’s Prize for 2018. The gross was won by Micheal White with Michael Lenihan taking the second gross.

It was a tough weekend for our President, losing his good friend of over 40 years during the week. Both Mick Ahern and President Mick Cronin were members of the Garda Siochana together and became great buddies during two very distinguished careers.

In his address on Sunday night he spoke of the friendships he had built since he joined the Gold Coast and he finished his speech by appealing to the members to ensure that the friendliness that prevails in the club be maintained at all costs. Down the years we have been very lucky here with all the Presidents we have had and we can easily say that Mick is up there with the best of them. Thanks Mick for a great weekend.

Special Prize for Blue Day:

Bob is sponsoring a special piece of Waterford Crystal which will go to the winner of the competition on the Blue Day, a day that we ask all members to wear blue to remind us of all the players who once played with us and who have gone to their eternal reward. The Blue Day will take place on Sunday 9th September.

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 20th Aug

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 20th August 2018:

General:

What a great day was had by all at the President’s Scramble on Saturday last. Our two Presidents started off the scramble at 12.30. The full timesheet showed the popularity of the Presidents involved. It was decided to split the field with half playing a 16 holes scramble and the other half playing a ten holes scramble. This was to have the players finishing at roughly the same time so that they could all sit down together to enjoy the Spare Ribs and Colcannon. Once again we must thank Michael Wall of Dawn Meats for the very generous sponsorship of the Spare Ribs. Full results below.

At the presentation following the Scramble cheques were presented by the Captain to the Dunhill Lourdes Invalid Fund (€500) and to Dungarvan Lions Club (€640). This money was raised during the Tony Dunford Memorial Day.

The new polo shirts are proving very popular and selling very well. Plenty of matches being played at present and hopefully all the match-play tournaments will conclude in time. Gold Coast Golf Notes 23rd July

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 23rd July 2018:

General:

Lots of activity on the course at present with good support for weekend competitions and plenty of club match-play matches being played during the week. Good to see all four members who were incapacitated recently returning to action, with three of them playing 18 holes and one 16 holes. Well done to all four and we are delighted to see you all returning to good health. Plenty of comments on the new club polo shirts, all very positive. Entry is now open for the President’s Prize, which will take place over the last week in August. Lots of good comments on the greens over the past few weeks. New colour on the kiosks. All our teams are now knocked out of the various tournaments and it is only right that we say thanks to all the members who took the time to get involved with managing the various teams. Martin Murray, Jimmy O’Dwyer, John White, Brian O’Connor, Johnny Hughes, Ger Bagge, Bob O’Brien and Liam Clancy all put in a lot of effort on behalf of the Club and have been involved with teams for a number of years. A few of these are now stepping down and no doubt but our incoming Captain will be working on his new team for 2019.

Gold Coast Golf Notes 16th July

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 16th July 2018:

Junior Cup in Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club:

So near and yet so far!

Gold Coast lined out against Clonmel Golf Club in the area final in Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club on Thursday last. Gold Coast’s team was as follows: Conan Watt, Ger Bagge, John Hallinan, Seanie Lenihan and John White. The game ebbed and flowed all thru and it was only over the finishing few holes that the game started to swing in favour of Clonmel. Eventually Clonmel gat the three wins required and take the match. We would like to wish Clonmel all the very best in the Munster Finals and hope that they bring home the title. Thanks to Martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer for managing the team, thanks also to the extended panel, caddies and all who supported the team on the day.

Status of Incomplete Cards and ‘No Returns’ in Qualifying Competitions

(a) All cards must be returned in Qualifying Competitions, whether complete or not.

(b) It is expected that every player who enters an 18 Hole Qualifying Competition intends to complete the round.

(c) Since an incomplete card and a ‘No Return’ may have the effect of increasing a player’s handicap, the club would be justified in refusing to accept a card or record a No Return when the player has walked in after playing only a few holes.

(d) Cards should not be issued to players when there is obviously insufficient light for them to complete the round.

(e) Sympathetic consideration should be given to players who have had to discontinue play for any cause considered to be reasonable by the organising Committee.

(f ) Clauses 23 (GPA Handicap Adjustment) and 24 (Suspension) of the UHS give clubs the discretion to deal with players who persistently submit incomplete cards or make ‘No Returns’ if they consider they are attempting to “build a handicap”.

The Handicap Committee has noted that a few players are not returning cards and asked that the above be brought to their attention.

Barton Shield:

We played Cahir Park Golf Club on Saturday morning in the 1st round of the Barton Shield in Clonmel Golf Club. Our team consisted of Eamonn O’Donnell, Micheal White, Michael Lenihan and Ger Bagge. Both pairs won their matches and this then set up an afternoon match with Waterford Castle. The line-up for this match was Eamonn O’Donnell, Micheal White, Derek Power and Ger Bagge. The Castle team proved much stronger and our team was finding it tough to stay with them and in the end Waterford Castle won by 2 holes. Again the Club would like to thank Martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer for looking after this team. Martin and Jimmy looked after three teams this year and this takes a lot of time and effort and also reduces the amount of golf they get to play themselves. It is very much appreciated by the players and club officials.
