Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 25th March 2019

Vincent Morrissey:

What a shock we all got on Saturday morning when we heard of the untimely passing of Vincent Morrissey. Vincent had worked in the Gold Coast as Manager for many years and was a very popular with all the staff and patrons of the hotel. He had a great talent with a camera and took many photos of the Golf Course and the resort and photos of presentations in the Gold Club. Our condolences to Zana Vincent’s family and the extended Morrissey family. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

John White Carpentry Winter League Final:

Copper Coast turn on the style to win back to back league titles. Match-play competitions like the winter league are often dependent on the draw and here the draw definitely favoured Copper Coast as the got off to a great start and kept the momentum going to eventually see off the challenge from Dunhill. As the Captain stated during the prize giving this year’s league was record breaking in the number of games played. Both teams in the final had contributed greatly to this and credit must go to the two team Captains, Liam Clancy and Tom White.

League Sponsor John White said that it was a pleasure for him to sponsor the league as the club meant so much to him and his family and he will hope to sponsor it again next year.

The addition of a lady to each team worked very well and hopefully next year more ladies will get involved.

Notes 18th March

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 18th March 2019

Last of the Summer Wine

George Hogan, the last remaining member of the fourball, affectionately known as ‘the last of the summer wine’ passed on to his eternal reward on Saturday evening last. George was a member of the Club since it’s inception up to 2012. In 2013 he was invited as a special guest in the Captain’s Prize and President’s Prize.

From 1993 George, Tom Fennell and Paddy Hannigan were given the honour of starting off all the Captain’s Prizes and President’s Prizes. The fourth member of the morning fourball was Willie Barron.

In the early days of the Gold Coast Golf Club George was always available to help out the officers when they needed a helping hand or a piece of advice.

Our condolences to David, Kevin, Brendan and Lynda, Sons and daughter of George.

Also, condolences to the Kirwan family of Kill on the death of Ca Rocket, Ca was a sister to the late Tom Kirwan.

John White Carpentry Winter League Final:

It took from the last week in October to next Saturday to arrive at the final of this year’s league. We had record participation in the league section, thanks to the closeness of the competition and the accommodating weather and there is no doubt that the two teams in the final really deserve to be there. It should be a ding-dong battle and predicting the result would be very foolish without first seeing the individual pairings. Liam Clancy and Tom White will have their homework done and will have their respective teams well prepared for this match. Best of luck to both camps. The match starts at 9.00 a.m. on Saturday and following that both teams will dine in the Gold Coast and then the presentation will take place. Copper Coast team: Liam Clancy, Niall Curran, Liam Hansbury, Darren Power, Pa Queally, Ger Darcy, Colin McArthur, John McArthur, Leo Wall, Ian Pericho, Thomas Power, Joe Curran, Darren O’Droma in for the injured Freddie McGuckian and Rosie Murphy.

Dunhill team: Richard Walsh, John White, Michael Kavanagh, Micheal White, Tom Moore, John W Walsh, Pat Crowley, Maurice Swan in for Willie Flavin, Jack Moore, Alan Harty, John Queally, John Flynn, Paul O’Dea and Ruth Hannigan.

Michael White Memorial Foursomes:

The draw for this competition will take place on Sunday 7th April at 4 p.m. Entries on the sheet supplied in the kiosk. Entry fee €5

Gold Coast Cup Singles Match-Play:

The draw for this competition will take place on Sunday 31st March at 4 p.m. Entries on the sheet supplied in the kiosk. Entry fee €5

Notes 11th Feb

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 11th February 2019

 John White Carpentry Winter League

After roughly 1800 games of golf, played over the past 15 weeks the Winter League finally came to a conclusion last Friday. It has been a fantastic league with the weather playing favourable, so many games played, great source of revenue for the Club, generously sponsored by club member John White. Dunhill, like Kilkenny in GAA parlance, reigned supreme for a long number of years and deservedly were the kingpins of the Winter League’s league section as they always put in an extraordinary effort to retain their title.

This year, however, there is a change at the top and Clancy’s Coasters just pipped Dunhill in the final week of the league to claim the title for the 1st time in a long time. Congratulations to the Copper Coast. The final scores in the league are as follows:

Copper Coast 4332

Dunhill 4307

Ballinacourty 4284

Tourneena 4248

Dungarvan 4114

Deise 4096

Abbeyside 3986

Now it is on to the knock-out stages of the league and first up is the quarter final between Tourneena and Dungarvan on Saturday 23rd Feb at 9 a.m. Tourneena will have the honour on the 1st Tee.

On Saturday 9th March both semi-finals will take place with the Copper Coast playing the winners of the quarter-final at 8.30 a.m. and Dunhill playing Ballinacourty at 9.45 a.m. In these matches Copper Coast and Dunhill will have the honour on the 1st Tee. The final is schedules for 9 a.m. on 23rd March. Following the final the presentation of prizes will take place in the Gold Coast Hotel.

Winter League Individual Winners:

Johnny Hughes and Micheal White tied for 1st place, each scoring 413 points. Maurice Swan was in 3rd place with 412 points. John White won the gross with 359 points, Joe Meade was 4th with 404 points.

Next Saturday/Sunday 16th/17th Feb:

There will be a three person scramble on both days for members and teams can be Gents, Mixed or Ladies.

RULES NIGHT

The Club held a rules night in the Goldcoast Hotel last Tuesday night.  It was a very informative evening and we thank the GUI and ILGU Rules Officials Tommy Donnelly and Phil Byrne for their professional presentation.  Thank you to all the members that attended on a snowy and wintery evening, we hope everyone was enlightened on the new rules changes.

Rule Books are available from the office and it is also suggested that players download R&A 2019 Official Rules of Golf App. It will help you quickly find the Rule you need and gives guidance for many common situations.  Log on to www.randa.org  and download this app https://www.randa.org/en/rog/2019/pages/visual-search
