Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 21st July 2024

JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL 2024

This event took place on Wednesday 10th July 2024 in the home of golf at the Goldcoast Golf Club.  Things got under way with an early start and with 32 holes facing members the car park was filling from 8 30am onwards with photos being taken and players being directed to their tee boxes for a shot gun start at 9am. In the early morning breeze, on a beautiful sunny day the smell of the Barbecue was received with much delight from players as they reached the 11th green.  We thank Bob O’Brien’s family, namely his wife and daughter who cooked the burgers and sausages all day and which were kindly supplied as always by Micheal Wall and other ingredients by John White.  The food trail continued to the 18th where the wonderful ladies from the club had tea/coffee, sandwiches and lovely cream cakes on offer. We say a big thank you to all the ladies involved.  In the late evening, we retired to the Hotel for a sit-down meal and presentation of prizes. The organiser of the event Bob O’Brien spoke of its success over the last 3 years and the money that has been raised for the palliative care unit in Dungarvan Community Hospital.  He thanked his hard working team for all their help during the day Maurice Fennell, John White, Michael Wall and Johnny Hughes. He thanked Mark Knowles and his team at the Hotel for the beautiful meal and wonderful service as always and Mark Linehan and his team including Rob and the green keeping staff. He then introduced Sean McGrath who spoke on behalf of the McGrath family and of course his late father John who was the man behind this little gem of a course that we call home today. We heard from Paula French from Dungarvan Community Hospital who thanked the members for their continued supported and explained where the funding raised will be going this year. It’s days like this that make you proud to be a member of such a great club as the Goldcoast Golf Club, where lifetime friends are made.

The winners on the day were as follows:

1st Nicholas Power, Alan Darcy, Darragh Power, and Micheal Kavanagh

2nd Neil Dermody, Corey Roche, Adam O’Riordan and John Callanan

3rd Lar Whelan, Tom Reynolds, Geraldine Hallinan and Darren Williams

4th Brian Dunbar, Mary Dunbar John W Walsh and Micheal Wall

CARTON CUP

Our Carton cup team under the management of Breda V and Anne met Castlecomer on Fri for the return leg of the tournament.

Our ladies played great golf, going to the wire with most matches, resulting in a playoff to secure a win. We were now on equal footing and a second playoff had to commence with the designated players to secure the overall result.

Aine was our lady who had won her own match on the 8th and now in the playoff again for the 3rd time played super golf up the first landing the ball beautifully on the green. Both were in the same position on the green and our opponent sank a long downhill putt to claim the win.

Congratulations and well done to our girls who have played great golf in keeping us in the tournament for so long and gave us many hours of nail-biting entertainment!  We would like to thank everyone involved from players, caddies, managers and especially our own members whose support was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Onwards and upwards for next year.

A word of thanks to the ladies from Castlecomer who gave us a very friendly game and were wonderful company. We wish them the very best of luck in their next leg, and hope they go all the way to Carton House.

GOLD COASTERS

Weather permitting, we will resume our weekly golf next Thursday, if not we will meet for cuppa and chat. Updates will be posted on our group.

JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL

Our memorial classic was a tremendous success with a packed course teeing off at 9am to play 32 holes of golf in different formats. There were food stations in the car park and a BBQ off the 12th fairway keeping us sustained on our way around the course.

Thanks to Bob and his team, the entire day went without a hitch and the weather played a huge part making it enjoyable for everyone!

After an enjoyable dinner, the presentation of prizes took place with some phenomenal scores from the men, well done to all in the winner’s enclosure. The proceeds of the day will go to the Palliative Care Ward in Dungarvan District Hospital and Paula French spoke about how the money will be used and how grateful they are to receive the funds.

Many thanks to all who helped in making the day a success, Bob and his team of Merry Men for organising the golf, to the ladies who catered in the car park, they were kept on their toes making fresh sandwiches, teas/coffees with some beautiful home baked desserts and cakes. To Sinead and Marie on the BBQ who produced delicious burgers and sausages which went down a treat, thank you everyone for all your hard work on the day, it was much appreciated.

A big Thank You to the members who sponsored all the food for the day, to the McGrath family for the beautiful meal it was extremely generous and appreciated.

Congratulations and well done to our girls so far who have played great golf and keeping us in the tournament! Tee times will be posted on WhatsApp and support on the day would be greatly appreciated.

INTER CLUB SENIOR FOURSOMES

Our girls met Mallow in the Regional semi-final which was played in Cork GC on Sat 13th July. Our team consisted of Irene/Esther, Aisling/Rosie, Fiona/Karen and subs were Katie/Miriam/Mary C

Our girls put up a tremendous battle against a strong opposition.  All matches were in a strong position with wins and losses, claw backs and all squares throughout. The level of golf played was spectacular and went to the wire with the last match!!

We are now on the map for teams that fight hard and are a force to be reckoned with, to date all our losses went to the last putt on the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st holes! I think that sums up the calibre of golfers on all our teams to date!!

Congrats and well done to our wonderful team, caddies and managers Bridge and Alice, not forgetting our on-course commentary from our L.Capt. Elaine who has kept us riveted over the last few months with her fantastic updates!

Congratulations to the Mallow girls who went on to beat home side Cork GC and now progress to the All-Ireland stages.

GOLD COASTERS

Our little group went on another day trip on Wed 26th to the Japanese Gardens in Tramore in beautiful sunny conditions. On arrival we had our coffee and cake followed by a tour of the magnificent gardens.

The gardens are a must see with stunning horticultural projects amongst Japanese structures, waterfalls and ponds. The history of the gardens is phenomenal with connections between Tramore and Japan.

After our tour, we sojourned to a nearby hotel for a delicious lunch on the terrace in glorious sunshine. It was a beautiful day out and many thanks to Anne for organising yet another fabulous event. Many thanks to Deirdre who surpassed herself again with some stunning photographic memoirs of the day.

On Thursday, we had our usual competition playing 9 holes in fine but somewhat strong blustery conditions. We had a nice turnout and Deirdre took on the running of the event in Anne’s absence.  Despite the wind we had some very healthy score returns and it was enjoyed by all.

INTER CLUB INTERMEDIATE FOURSOMES

Our Intermediate team fought a great battle in Lismore against a home side, but sadly succumbed to the home team. Our girls did us proud and played brilliant golf to secure a 2/2 resulting in a playoff!!

First home was Mairead/Leanne winning their match on the 16th and Martina/Gillian winning on the 18th. Mairead/Leanne were nominated for the playoff, but were unfortunate to find the greenside bunker which cost them the hole.

However, it was tremendous and nail biting golf from our girls to bring them to the playoff stage.  Congrats to all and especially Mary K and all the supporters who came to cheer on the side.

Wishing the Lismore team the very best of luck in the next leg and thank you for a very sporting and friendly game.

INTER-CLUB MIXED FOURSOMES

Our team under the management of John H and Aisling took on Faithlegg on home turf on Saturday and fought a magnificent battle against a very formidable opposition.

The golf was spectacular from both sides and ended in a 2/2 which ensued a playoff to the 21st hole. John W/Ger were the nominated pairing for the playoff against a very strong Faithlegg couple who played textbook golf to secure the win!

We are very proud of our team who have played Ryder Cup golf throughout the tournament and kept us captivated with riveting and nail biting moments which will be remembered forever.

Congratulations John, Aisling and your wonderful team who kept us entertained for many months, well done everybody!!! Wishing Faithlegg the very best in the next leg of the tournament and thank you all for a very sporting and friendly game.

CAPTAINS PRIZE 2024

Our two Captains held their weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday last and what a weekend it turned out to be.  We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather as the Gods shone down on us.  It all began with the Captains Drive-in on Wednesday night.  I’m glad to report that Elaine and David both spilt the fairway on the first hole!  It continued with the Mixed Scramble with some great scores being returned. Over the 13 holes the winners were as follows: 1st Kevin Walsh, Paddy Walsh, Gerardine Hallinan and John Fennell.  2nd Jack Mullaney, Thomas Long, Sean O’Ciarba and John Faherty. 3rd Darren Williams, Micheal Wall, Bridge Walsh and Patrica Doyle. 4th Dermot Walsh, Brian Looby, David McCarthy and Ned O’Connor. 5th Micheal Kavanagh, Barry Doyle  Nicholas Doyle and Kyle De Winter. 6th John White, Darren Power, Tony Ruane and Mary Dunbar.

Friday and Saturday saw our qualifying rounds taking place.  Micheal Kavanagh posted a 68 nett on Friday to be over-night leader followed closely by Tony Keaver.  Things changed a little on Saturday with Alan Landers joining the leading group.

Sunday morning brought another day of brilliant sunshine, the carpark was busy as members arrived for the final round with everyone on their tee boxes for the shotgun start.  Some great scoring again was returned but as the dust settled, we had new champion Tony Keaver the Captains Prize winner for 2024, followed in second place by Micheal Kavanagh.

We retired to the Hotel for food and the prize presentation.  President John Hallinan got proceedings under way.  He welcomed everyone and called on Lady President Anne Keane and Lady Captain Elaine Nash who presented the ladies with their prizes. Congratulations to Lady Captains Winner for 2024 Mairead Ryan.

It was then the turn of the Men’s Club President John who spoke very highly of Captain David O’Connor and his achievements in the club both has a player and committee member.  It was then the Captains turn and he presented a very well written speech, in it thanking Micheal Wall for asking him to be Vice-Captain which he described as a honour to hold the office.  As Captain he went on to thank kiosk staff Director of Golf Irene Lynch and Brian Fahey, Rob and his Green Keeping staff, Mark Lenihan and the Management team, our Hotel staff for the beautiful food and the McGrath Family for our fabulous golf course.   He thanked John White, John Hallinan, Maurice Fennell, Micheal Wall and of course Brendan O’Brien for all their hard work in looking after the scorecards and helping to make the weekend the success it was.  He then presented a bouquet of flowers to lady Captain Elaine.  I want to say well done to Captains David and Elaine for all your hard work and continued success for 2024.
