Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 28th November 2021

WINTER LEAGUE REVIEW

John white Carpentry sponsored winter league Captains held a meeting on Monday night to discuss changes to this year’s winter league. The following are the changes approved by the club committee, the best eight scores achieved by an individual player, will count towards the team score. In the case of a substitute being required, the minimum period will be 3 weeks. The substitute will be taken from the top of the list of substitutes available. There can only be one lady member on each team.

WINTER GOLF PLAYING HANDICAP

In order to reflect the reduced length of the course, bunkers GUR and preferred lies for the winter months, from Saturday 27th November players will play from 88% of their Course Handicap rounded.  The competition software and label printout will indicate a person’s playing handicap on the day of entry.

LIONS CLUB CHRISTMAS APPEAL

The Goldcoast Golf Club are delighted again to be associated with the Lions Club Christmas Appeal.  Our Captains are appealing to all members to come along and play and contribute by entering competitions or buying raffle tickets.  Club competition proceeds between 6th to 12th December with be donated by the Club and Company.  In conjunction with this we are also running a Raffle with an array of prizes.

Your competition entries, donations and raffle ticket purchases will help raise much needed funds to help those less well off in our society.  The Goldcoast members have always been generous in their support and we know this will continue again for this very worthy cause.

Raffle in Aid of Lions Club: 1st prize Hamper kindly sponsored by an anonymous member, 2nd prize Hamper sponsored by Tim O’Driscoll, 3rd prize a Turkey and 4th a Ham sponsored by Premium Butchers, and other prizes of wine. Raffle tickets are on sale in the Kiosk, 3 strips of tickets €5.

FLAG POLES

Flag Poles maybe be removed now on the greens remember Golf Union Ireland Covid 19 guidelines must be adhered to at all times i.e. one person to remove and replace flag and hand sanitizer must be used at all times.

SLOW PLAY

I have been contacted by some members about slow play on the course we must try and make the game enjoyable for everyone both members and visitors alike remember the 3min rule for searching for a lost ball.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S NORTH MON REUNION

Our Club Captain Seamus had a lovely reunion recently with a former pal from his schooldays in the North Mon. In a discussion that came about by chance on the day of the President’s prize, the possibility emerged that a former close pal of Seamus, whom he had not met since his schooldays, was a member in our club. Following a few phone calls, it was confirmed that Victor Mullins was indeed the school friend that Seamus had not met since they left school 51 years ago. I am reliably told that when the two met around the 17th hole two weeks ago, their golf partners were left waiting around, with time for coffee, while the two lads relived their youth. Seamus and Victor played in a three ball today. The third member of the group had to remind them, on a number of occasions, that they were about to play off the wrong tee as they were so engaged in conversation. On another occasion he informed them both, that they needed to reverse about thirty yards so as to play their next shot. It was lovely to be a part of this special reunion of “The Boys of North Mon”.

Presentation took place in the clubhouse and a big thank you to Maria, Marianne and team for their efficiency throughout, Well Done!!

The next outing will be our own course on Thursday 24th February and we would like to see as many of our new members as possible join our league. We will be holding this event in conjunction with the Lion’s Club Hamper Appeal with entries being donated as part of our annual fundraiser for the cause. The drawsheet is online and also posted in the kiosk, so please check either for your playing partners on the day. Any updates or changes will be posted on our What’sApp group, all donations and the purchase of raffle tickets are greatly appreciated!!

MARKING OF CARDS

Golf Ireland guidelines have stated that all 3 handicaps must be recorded on cards for competition and casual rounds for handicap purposes. To avoid disqualification you must record your h/cap index, playing h/cap and

most importantly the course h/cap, all of these are available on the Golf Ireland app and also on screen when you log in for competitions. It is also important not to enter a zero for stableford competitions as it interferes with standard scratch, if you blank a hole just record the shots as the computer will adjust accordingly. All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in agreement with the player before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

NEW MEMBER DEALS

Ladies, if you had ever thought of taking up golf, now is the time to do it, our Lady Captain Anne and any committee member would be delighted to take out potential members and showcase our beautiful course and unrivalled scenery!! There are great deals on offer for new members and beginners including tuition, please contact our Director of Golf Irene or Brian in the kiosk on 058 44055 for more information.

The management and staff have implemented all the safety procedures to protect both staff and members who wish to play golf at the Gold Coast GC. Please

keep yourself informed of new notifications within the club!

SOUTH EAST COASTAL ALLIANCE

The alliance is an ideal opportunity to play other courses for €10 green fee and €10 one off registration fee payable on the first day of play. Dungarvan have agreed to start the ball rolling with our first outing on Thursday 25th November, tee from 10.00 – 11.30am. We would like to see as many beginners as possible as this is a great way to integrate with members from other clubs, and is always a lovely day out!! Please give thumbs up on our group if you would like to play.  All information and any changes to any event will be posted on our What’sApp group

CHRISTMAS SCRAMBLE

Our Christmas Scramble this year takes place on Sunday 5th Dec and is very kindly sponsored by Shaws Department Stores to whom we are very grateful. We will be holding this event in conjunction with the Lion’s Club Hamper Appeal with entries being donated as part of our annual fundraiser for the cause. The drawsheet will be online and also posted in the kiosk shortly, so please add your name for a fun day out and help a worthwhile cause!! Any updates or changes will be posted on our What’sApp group.

MARKING OF CARDS

Golf Ireland guidelines have stated that all 3 handicaps must be recorded on cards for competition and casual rounds for handicap purposes. To avoid disqualification you must record your h/cap index, playing h/cap and most importantly the course h/cap, all of these are available on the Golf Ireland app and also on screen when you log in for competitions. It is also important not to enter a zero for stableford competitions as it interferes with standard scratch, if you blank a hole just record the shots as the computer will adjust accordingly. All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in agreement with the player

before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

Please keep yourself informed of new notifications within the club!

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 13th November 2021

AGM

The Men’s Club AGM took place last Sunday 14th November, first up was the end of year presentation.  A full list of prize winners will be in next weeks notes.

We then had the start of the meeting and our President Brian got things under way.  He called on Captain John to make his end of year speech, which he delivered to the meeting in a professional manner.  John spoke very highly of the late John McGrath, founder of our beautiful club, he described him as a true friend and that he called to see him on the weekend of his Captain’s prize to wish him well which meant so much to him.  He thanked President Brian Dunbar for all his help over the last two years. He also thanked Mark, Irene and Brian in the kiosk and Bob O’Brien for all his help with photos. He thanked Rob and all his ground staff for the ongoing maintenance and the drainage work that had been carried out on the course this year. He gave a special mention to all the team captains that looked after teams during the year.  He then wished the incoming Captain and President all the best for 2022.

On a personal level I would like to wish John and Brian a relaxing year of golf and thank them for all their hard work over the last two years.

Our Secretary Johnny Hughes gave a well prepared report as always from our last AGM back in 2019.  He spoke about the changes to the club constitution which was prepared back in 1997 by John Murphy and John McGrath and he thanked Martin Murray, Bob O’ Brien, Mark Lenihan and the two ladies from the ladies Club for all their hard work in getting it prepared for the meeting so members could vote on it. It was voted in with no objections.

Next up was our Treasurer Maurice Fennell who also gave a well presented finance report showing the club in a good state of affairs. We then had the election of officers for 2022: Captain Seamus O’Connell, President Frank Mulvihill, Vice Captain Michael Wall, Secretary Johnny Hughes, Treasurer Maurice Fennell, P.R.O. Nicholas Power, Handicap Secretary Martin Morris, Ex-Officios John White and Brian Dunbar, Committee Members Mark Lenihan, Brian Fahey and Bob O Brien.

Please keep yourself informed of new notifications within the club!

AGM

Our AGM was held on Friday 5th November at 7.30pm in the Gold Coast Hotel and proved to be a very positive and productive meeting. Our lady Captain Anne opened the proceedings with two very important presentations, namely Golf Ireland Silver Spoon for outstanding stroke play golf which was presented to Aisling Fennell. Aisling has been playing phenomenal golf all year reducing her handicap from 8 to 3 and is the lowest handicap lady we have had in the club for many years!

Golfer of the Year recipient was our very hard working Handicap Secretary Mary Kiely which was no surprise as Mary also played fabulous golf during the year along

with 2 Hole in One’s. Mary was extremely diligent in her role as club Secretary and is even more diligent in her new role in every aspect of the new handicap system. Both Mary and Aisling deserved their accolades and we congratulate them on super golf!! Well Done Girls.

Our ever efficient Hon. Sec. Elaine read her report of the years events which was very detailed and informative and covered a multitude of events for such a short period. She spoke of the consequences of the pandemic and all it entailed, despite this Elaine did a fabulous job in organising everything and we are so lucky to have her. Thank you Elaine for your Trojan work throughout the year!

Angela, our Treasurer who looked after the finances did a miraculous job in keeping us very solvent throughout the stop, start COVID19 restrictions reported a very healthy bank balance. Angela has decided to step down as treasurer but is staying on committee and handing the role to Mairead in whom we have the utmost confidence. Thank you Angela for keeping us afloat and solvent, the Minister for Finance would not have done better!!

Our Lady Captain Anne gave her wonderful speech in which she thanked everyone on committee for their help and advice throughout her tenure as Captain. “Little did I think that back at the AGM in 2019 when I accepted the role that I’d be giving my final speech in 2021” Anne has been a very steadying influence, working away behind the scenes during the pandemic in readiness for our staggered comeback, but once we were back the show was on the road!! Her final duty on the night was handing over the reins to incoming Lady Captain Isobel who accepted the challenge and looked forward to her year and said it was an honour to serve her club. Wishing Isobel the very best for 2022 and thank you Anne for your years as our Captain, it was an absolute pleasure to work with you and here’s to your long overdue retirement!!

Our new L. Captain Isobel is very fortunate to hold onto almost the entire present committee, only two members have stepped down after years of service and we thank them most sincerely for their input to date. We have new replacements and a bit of a re-shuffle within the committee including our new Lady Vice Captain Rosie who we are delighted has taken up the challenge.. We are very fortunate to have secured a comparatively young committee and we look forward to new and fresh ideas for the coming year!

All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in agreement with the player before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 31st October 2021

JOHN McGRATH R.I.P.

Sometimes when you sit down to write a piece about someone, it can be simple enough, but in this case, it is different as John McGrath had so many different aspects to his life. From family to sport to work John achieved so much and I will try to record some of these achievements here.

John married Ann Kiely in 1966 and together they formed the perfect team for all that was to come. John would bounce all his ideas off Ann and together they would formulate their plans.

John qualified as a carpenter and in the mid sixties he saw the need for a new joinery in the area. He built Waterford Joinery and it was opened in 1967. Further expansion took place in the early 70’s as demand for their products increased and at one time the workforce was as high as 100 people.

In 1979 John & Ann purchased the former Elsted’s pub in Ballinacourty and this was the start of their major development in the area. The Gold Coast Restaurant was built and worked started on the holiday homes in the early 80’s. While all this was going on John and Ann purchased the Clonea Strand Hotel in 1980 and carried out major development work there during the late 80’s.

In 1993 John bought the golf course, which was 9 holes at the time. It was affiliated to the GUI the following year. Land from the closed Quigley Magnesite plant went up for sale and was duly purchased by John, 9 extra holes was developed and in 1997 Gold Coast Golf Club became an 18 Hole Championship Course.

Further development took place at the Gold Coast and in 1995 Gold Coast Hotel and Leisure Centre opened to the public.

In the late 90’s John added the villas to his growing portfolio and in 2003 work started on the lodges with this development finishing in 2007.

John bought the Bayview Mobile Home Park in 2007 and expanded it in 2009. In 2011 John decided to develop a pitch in the complex so that teams could come to train. This really became a pet project for John and for many years John could be seen out cutting the grass himself. So many county teams have now used the pitch for training and always the comments about the ground are always so positive.

Further land was purchased and presently it is being developed as Bayview 2 and this will open in 2022

Anyone who knew John will know that John’s sporting preference was always hurling. John began his hurling career with Ballinameala and was always very proud of his involvement with his home club, where he won minor divisional titles in 1959 and 1960.

John later moved to Abbeyside GAA Club and played senior hurling for many years. While he never won a county final, he did win a Sargeant Cup medal in 1963. During that year John was selected on the county panel. Unfortunately, Waterford lost to Kilkenny in the All Ireland final but Waterford did win the National League. This love of hurling led to John’s involvement with ‘The former county hurlers association’ where he served as secretary for many years. In a fitting tribute to John and as a mark of the high esteem which he was held in by this association, members travelled from all over the country to pay their respects at the wake on Monday evening and with a ‘guard of honour’ on Tuesday morning.

John was also a gifted footballer and captained Ballinacourty to the Intermediate County Final in 1965. Even when John retired he was always available to advise the club on development work.

John was also an accomplished golfer and when Gold Coast Pierce Purcell team went all the way to the Munster Final in the late 90’s John and his partner John White won every match they played.

He was one of the humblest men you could ever meet, always ready to give of himself, never afraid of hard work and probably one of the best business men this town has ever seen.

At the funeral Gold Coast Golf Club Officers and members, together with members of Abbeyside/Ballinacourty and the Former County hurlers provided a ‘guard of honour’ for John.

John will be greatly missed by his wife Ann, family Seán, Máire, Siobhán, Micheál, Áine and Pádraig, brother Paddy, sisters Maura, Ann, Joan and Assumpta, grandchildren, and extended family.

SOUTH EAST COASTAL ALLIANCE

The alliance which was initially set up for high handicappers attracted the attention of many ladies from the south-eastern clubs involved at the time and became open to all handicap levels. Numbers grew and it became very viable for many clubs taking in green fees during the winter months. Unfortunately the pandemic wreaked havoc with all aspects of golf and 3 of the clubs withdrew, leaving us with the 3 local clubs only. After a meeting with the Reps from the local clubs, it was decided to run it for 3 outings for this year and engage with the new clubs who placed an interest in joining us for the next season.

Please give a thumbs up on our group if you would like to play.  All information and any changes to any event will be posted on our WhatsApp group

CONDOLENCES

Our Lady Captain, committee and members offer our heartfelt condolences to Ann and the McGrath family on the very sad passing of our esteemed founder John McGrath. A Guard of Honour was provided by the GAA and Gold Coast Golf Clubs for his final journey from his home in Landsend to St. Augustines Church, Abbeyside where he was laid to rest. This was a fitting tribute for a man whose entire life revolved around his beloved GAA and a game of golf on the beautiful fairways of his pride and joy, the Gold Coast Golf Club.

John was a man of great vision and foresight with a brilliant business acumen and a finger on the pulse of everything that was happening. He was an absolute gentleman and will be fondly remembered by his loving family, friends, Officers and members of the Gold Coast both past and present, May he Rest In Peace.

SYMPATHY

Our Lady Captain Anne, committee and members would like to convey our sincere sympathy to our member Mairead and the extended Manning and Murphy families on the very sad passing of her beloved mother Pauline. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad and difficult time. May Pauline Rest In Peace.
