Inter-County Hurlers in Gold Coast

The annual visit of the former Inter-County Hurlers Society took place over the weekend and it was great to see so many of the finest hurlers to play the game come along to play golf, meet and chat. Discussions went long into the night and on Saturday the Annual Dinner took place in the Gold Coast Hotel.

Each year a different county takes over the running of the Society, last year it was Clare, and this year it is Waterford’s turn. Stephen Greene as Captain and Justin Spratt as President will look to get as many past Waterford Hurlers involved as possible, we wish them well for their year.

Sympathy

Last week we all heard, with profound shock, of the death of Helen Fennell. Helen was one of the founder members of the Ladies Club and with her predeceased husband, Thomas, they both were an integral part of the Club for many years. Helen served as Lady Captain in 1995 and as Lady President in 2000. A Guard of Honour was provided by the Club at Helen’s Funeral.

Our condolences to Caroline and the extended Fennell family. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

25th Anniversary Celebrations

Sunday 22nd September was a day to remember in our club, with past and present officers, members and friends gathered together to celebrate 25 years in the beautiful Gold Coast Golf Resort. It was a day full of fun, memories, fabulous food, magnificent prizes and tokens of gratitude from the Club which was a wonderful gesture to the members!! There was a choice of golf on the day from 18 Hole Singles for ladies and gents to a Mixed Scramble for those looking for a bit of fun golf, the weather was fine and sunny which added to the occasion!!

Presentation of prizes and a sumptuous 4 course meal was served at 4pm in the Gold Coast Hotel amid chatter, laughter and catch-ups with old and new members and friends, archival photos were screened on a loop system and brought about many comments, both good and not so complimentary!! New and updated photos were then taken by our resident photographers Bob and Willie which were all uploaded to the Whats App group on Monday morning, what a stunning selection of photos!!

A big Thank You to all involved on the day, to the management, staff, caterers, waiting staff and the McGrath family for a fabulous and momentous day, here’s to the next 25!!

Welcome

The ladies Club would like to welcome our new Administer in the kiosk, Brian has worked for many years on the course and is no stranger to the workings of the system as a keen and avid golfer himself. He has taken to his new job like a duck to water, ever ready with answers and advice for any queries!! We are delighted you have joined the admin side and wish you many happy years in your new position!! Many have wondered if he will be the new Bob?? Sorry to say, there is only one “BOB”

John McGrath spoke of the development of the course and mentioned many of the founding members of the Gold Coast Golf Club. Captains Pat Power and Ruth Hannigan thanked all the Officers who had contributed so much during the past 25 years. The whole event was expertly handled by our President, Michael Wall who turned out to be a wonderful and witty MC on the day. MARY K SCOOPS THE PRESIDENTS PRIZE

This year our Presidents Michael and Alice tested the waters with a new format for the final day of the weekend, and what a success it proved to be!! With a shotgun start at 10am all participants started on their respective tees working like clockwork around the course with everybody finished by 1.30 just in time for the delicious BBQ manned by our new chefs all the way from Cork!! The excitement was electric in the car park when the winners of the ladies and mens became known, John White sailed home with a magnificent 41pts playing off a h/cap of 4 and our Mary K floated in with 43pts off a h/cap of 12, well done to both on super scores!!

The BBQ was enjoyed in super sunshine with the wine flowing and background music being played keeping everybody in the groove, the presentation of prizes took place amid rapturous applause and much hilarity!! The day went without a hitch and great credit is due to the organising committee, the sponsors who provided the delicious food and wines and the O’Driscoll family who did a fabulous job in the catering department, not forgetting David who provided the music and PA system for the occasion. Well Done to you all!!!

President’s Prize 2019:

As Royco said yesterday, Michael, you nailed it. What a day it turned out to be. Having taken the decision to go with a shotgun start for the final round of his President’s Prize and getting the ladies involved as well, Michael Wall faced into his weekend not really knowing how everything was going to turn out. By 9.30 very nearly all the 81 players taking part in the shotgun start were present at the course with the practice green full. By 9.55 the car park was empty as all players had departed to their various starting points and by 10.00 the action had commenced. In the meantime preparations were going ahead in the car park with tables being set up, stools being provided, BBQ fired up etc. By 1.00 p.m. the first burger was ready for tasting, expertly cooked by our chefs, Tom, Caroline and June. At 1.20, 3 hours and 20 minutes after they starting, the first of the players starting arriving into the car park having completed their rounds of golf. Three score input points had been set up and this worked very well and soon all players were able to avail themselves of the delicious food that was being provided. Burgers, sausages, rolls, Apple tarts, cakes and wine was available in abundance and music was provided by David Power. While all this was going on Ruth and Teresa were checking the scores of the ladies and Irene, Martin and John were checking the men’s scores. At 15.25 Pat Power introduced the presentation party and by 15.50 all the prized had been distributed.

The weather always makes a big difference and Michael and Alice were blessed with the day. Both President’s were delighted with the day and they are to be commended on the initiative and thanked for all the work they put into the day. Also thanks to Irene, Brian Dunbar, John and Pa, our chefs, Tom, June and Caroline and all who helped out in any way to make the day the success it turned out to be.

Come & Try Golf Day

Another innovation for the Gold Coast. The Club asked members to invite friends, neighbours etc to come and try playing golf and what a success it turned out to be. Over 90 people took to the fairways in a 9 hole scramble, with 2 nine holes being used. It kicked off at 10 a.m. and just after noon the first of the golfers starting arriving back at the feeding station expertly manned by Maurice and Josephine. A sincere thanks to all the members who got involved and played. Hopefully we will get some new members from the day. I’m sure that this will now become an annual event.

25th Anniversary Celebrations:

The Gold Coast will celebrate 25 years in existence on Sunday 22nd September. Charity Day in September:

This year we are joining with the Ladies Club on Sunday 15th Sept to help raise some money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Last year we wore our club colours on the day but this year all members are asked to wear pink as that is the colour that represents the charity we will be playing for.

Come and Try Golf Day

Our fun day was held on Sunday 11th August with a huge turnout from members and visitors of all ages from 9yrs and upwards, despite the fact we were playing a 9 Hole scramble all 18 tees were used several times!! With a shotgun start, all teams were in together around 1pm for the delicious BBQ prepared by our resident chefs, Maurice and Josephine who did a marvellous job despite the long queues of very hungry golfers. There was plenty of vino to keep the non-drivers happy as well as minerals and water for everybody, thanks to all involved in organising and sponsoring the event, a great day!! Presentation of all outstanding and scramble prizes took place in the car park in glorious sunshine with plenty of giveaways for the less fortunate!! Well Done.
