Gold Coast Golf Notes 16th July

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 16th July 2018:

Junior Cup in Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club:

So near and yet so far!

Gold Coast lined out against Clonmel Golf Club in the area final in Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club on Thursday last. Gold Coast’s team was as follows: Conan Watt, Ger Bagge, John Hallinan, Seanie Lenihan and John White. The game ebbed and flowed all thru and it was only over the finishing few holes that the game started to swing in favour of Clonmel. Eventually Clonmel gat the three wins required and take the match. We would like to wish Clonmel all the very best in the Munster Finals and hope that they bring home the title. Thanks to Martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer for managing the team, thanks also to the extended panel, caddies and all who supported the team on the day.

Status of Incomplete Cards and ‘No Returns’ in Qualifying Competitions

(a) All cards must be returned in Qualifying Competitions, whether complete or not.

(b) It is expected that every player who enters an 18 Hole Qualifying Competition intends to complete the round.

(c) Since an incomplete card and a ‘No Return’ may have the effect of increasing a player’s handicap, the club would be justified in refusing to accept a card or record a No Return when the player has walked in after playing only a few holes.

(d) Cards should not be issued to players when there is obviously insufficient light for them to complete the round.

(e) Sympathetic consideration should be given to players who have had to discontinue play for any cause considered to be reasonable by the organising Committee.

(f ) Clauses 23 (GPA Handicap Adjustment) and 24 (Suspension) of the UHS give clubs the discretion to deal with players who persistently submit incomplete cards or make ‘No Returns’ if they consider they are attempting to “build a handicap”.

The Handicap Committee has noted that a few players are not returning cards and asked that the above be brought to their attention.

Barton Shield:

We played Cahir Park Golf Club on Saturday morning in the 1st round of the Barton Shield in Clonmel Golf Club. Our team consisted of Eamonn O’Donnell, Micheal White, Michael Lenihan and Ger Bagge. Both pairs won their matches and this then set up an afternoon match with Waterford Castle. The line-up for this match was Eamonn O’Donnell, Micheal White, Derek Power and Ger Bagge. The Castle team proved much stronger and our team was finding it tough to stay with them and in the end Waterford Castle won by 2 holes. Again the Club would like to thank Martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer for looking after this team. Martin and Jimmy looked after three teams this year and this takes a lot of time and effort and also reduces the amount of golf they get to play themselves. It is very much appreciated by the players and club officials.

New Club Polo Shirts:

Our new blue tops will be available at the kiosk. The new Callaway shirts will cost €35 each. Our teams looked very well in them during the past week and all comments on the shirts has been very positive.

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 2nd July

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 2nd July 2018:

Junior Cup in Gold Coast:

Glorious sunshine, fast greens, immaculate fairways, fair roughs, very little wind and sailing boats in the harbour was what we had to offer the eight teams that visited us here in the Gold Coast on Saturday and Sunday for the local section of this year’s Irish Junior Cup.

We welcomed West Waterford to the Gold Coast on Saturday for the first round match in the Junior Cup. By the time the match teed off the temp was rising fast and had already exceed the low 20’s. The matches were as follows, Gold Coast names first: Pat Power v Luke Swayne, Ger Bagge v John O’Mahony, Seanie Lenihan v Morris Ferncombe, John White v Aaron Crotty and Tom White v Andy Hickey. At the turn Gold Coast were leading in four matches but with match-play you never know what is going to happen and true to say West Waterford came back as the match progressed and made Gold Coast fight very hard for their victory.

On Saturday evening Gold Coast had another local derby against our neighbours Dungarvan. Team managers martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer made a number of changes to the team, mostly due to the heat, and the following were the matches: David O’Connor v Michael Troy, Ger Bagge v Barry Hamilton, John Hallinan v David Buckley, Conan Watt v David Shanley, John White v Barry Morrissey. Again we were put to the test but experience and good golf resulted in a win for the Gold Coast.

Sunday morning and Tramore were the opponents we faced in the area final. The line-out was as follows: David O’Connor v Martin Walsh, Ger Bagge v Kevin Kinsella, John Hallinan v Dave Bennett, John White v Paul Power, Tom White v Noel Cunningham. Both teams won two matches and it was down to the final hole before Gold Coast eventually won the game.

Huge congratulations to all involved, to all the players, caddies, supporters and Managers Martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer.

Gold Coast will now meet Clonmel in the next round.

Club Match-Play Competitions:

Good to see:

Too often we worry about the small things in life and forget what is happening all around us. Over the past while a number of our members suffered some health problems and now, thankfully, all four are on the way to recovery. Great to see Mick back playing golf again, Paddy was down watching the Junior Cup, albeit in a buggy, and we had a visit from our President Mick during the week and it is good to see he is making progress, Maurice is back hitting golf balls again and hopes to make a full return in a few weeks.

Belvedere Trophy 2018:

Waterford came to the Gold Coast with a three/two lead and needed half the match on the night with the Gold Coast to get thru the first round of the Belvedere Trophy. The Gold Coast on the night was Des O’Brien, Leo Wall, Tim O’Driscoll, Richard Lambert, John Queally, Tom Power, Rafael Alvarez, Robert Smyth, Tony Condon and Willie Bloomer. Despite the lads putting up a great battle Waterford eventually won in the end. Thanks to Liam Clancy and all the players involved.

Tony Dunford Memorial 2018:

If Heineken did golf then they would run the Tony Dunford Memorial as this year’s event was probably the best one ever. Glorious sunshine with a slight breeze was the order of the day. The buzz around the kiosk from 8.15 on was electric as players gathered to find out the format of the competition and what tees they would be playing off. The catering crews were also arriving and getting things ready to feed the hungry golfers as they arrived at the food stations. By 9.00 all the players were on the course and in action. The smell of the BBQ was wafting over the course and tempting all the golfers, especially those who missed breakfast. As the day progressed the craic improved and golfers were enjoying the culinary expertise of those providing the burgers, sausages and rashers at the 9th tee and the sandwiches and tea and coffee at the kiosk. Some unbelievable golf was being played by most teams and this was reflected in the scoring.

Gold Coast Golf Notes 18th June

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 18th June 2018:

Irish Mixed Foursomes:

On Saturday last we travelled the short distance to West Waterford to play the hosts in a first round match of the Irish Mixed Foursomes. Our team of Kieran Cullinan, Rosemary Murphy, Micheal White, Elaine Goss, Michael Kavanagh, Helena Fitzgerald, John White, Karen Darcy, Eamonn O’Donnell and Gerardine Hallinan played very well on the day but came up against a strong West Waterford team who just pipped us on the 18th hole in the final match. Our thanks to Austin & Bridget for their hospitality during our practice session and on Saturday.

There was one highlight from the day and that was Eamonn O’Donnell getting a hole in one on the 13th Hole, the third hole in one for this talented young golfer.

Senior Cup:

On next Saturday 23rd June Gold Coast will play Mitchelstown in the 1st round of the Irish Senior Cup in Dungarvan at 8.40 a.m. Martin Murray and Jimmy O’Dwyer are in charge here and I am sure that they would appreciate any support for the team from members.

Gold Coast play Waterford in the 1st round of this competition in Waterford this evening (Monday) at 5 p.m. The return leg will take place in the Gold Coast at a date to be fixed.

Michael Cashman Foursomes:

Liam Clancy’s charges went into battle with last year’s All Ireland winners Ballykisteen on Saturday last and what a performance they put up as they eventually only succumbed on the 19th hole. Tomas Wall, Tom Power, Gerry Comerford, Rafael Alvarez, Dave O’Connor, Tony Condon, Peter McArdle, Des O’Brien, Leo Wall and Brendan Coughlan all played well and deserve great credit for the way they performed against a very strong team that has aspirations of returning to the All Ireland again this year.

Gold Coast Golf Notes 4th June

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 4th June 2018:

Captain’s Prize 2018:

Met Eireann left us down again. They promised us thunder and lightning and showers for the weekend but we saw none of them. Outside of that everything else went according to the plan of our Captain and ended up being a very successful weekend, especially for those in the prizes. The Captain’s Prize kicked off on Friday and continued until Saturday evening when the top 50 then went on to the timesheet for Sunday morning. Eamon O’Donnell was the overnight leader on Friday night and he maintained that position on Saturday nigh but now he had a number of players on his heels with Darrach Breathnach and Darren Williams both shooting 41 points each a point behind Eamon. On Sunday John Kiely was the early leader but was quickly caught by John White, who was leading with just 6 players on the course. John McArthur then posted a score of 38 pts to add to his previous score of 37 pts to take the clubhouse lead of 75 pts with one group remaining. Eamon O’Donnell proved just how good a golfer he is by again securing a score, in the final group, good enough to take the title by 2 shots, his second major in a row. Eamon is one of the most popular members in the Club and a great contributor to the Gold Coast, sponsoring the 1st prize for our classic this year. Great to see our youths coming thru, with John McArthur in second place. Full results below.

The contribution made this year by our Captain has been immense and again this weekend Tim was in control of everything that happened. He will be a hard act to follow.

On Saturday we had a visit from our Club President Mick Cronin. Mick is recovering very well from a serious operation. Despite being advised not to he still travelled up to wish the Captain well over his weekend. It just shows the character of the man. On Sunday night Michael Wall deputised for Mick and our thanks to Michael for stepping in.

Jimmy Bruen Shield:

Gold Coast travelled to Youghal on Thursday evening to play Tramore in the preliminary round of the Jimmy Bruen. After 18 holes both teams were still level which necessitated a match going down 19th before Gold Coast were declared winners

Back to the drawing board for the manager as he had now to plan for the game against Dunmore East knowing that he would be short a few players who were tied up with prior commitments.

Despite a slow start, it looked too close to call after the first nine but Gold Coast started to get on top early in the back nine and went on to win to set up a match against Waterford Castle. Once again we started very slowly and after 8 or 9 holes we were down in four matches. But once again the team spirit prevailed and slowly but surely we fought our way back to eventually win the match. Gold Coast went on to play West Waterford on Sunday in a repeat of last year’s final. Unfortunately for Gold Coast the result was the same as last year and West Waterford qualified for the area final. We wish them the very best of luck in that match and hope they qualify for the Munster Finals.

All the team were loud in their praise of the effort put in by the team manager John White. He left no stone unturned in endeavours his involvement with this team is very much appreciated by all here in the club. Thanks John. The panel of players used during the four matches was as follows: Ger Bagge, John Flynn, Tom White, Mark Lenihan, Colin McArthur, Roy Ware, Seanie Lenihan, Neil Dermody, Darren O’Droma, Michael Kavanagh, Niall Curran, Conor Clancy, Kieran Cullinan, John Kiely, Declan Kiely, David O’Connor. Thanks to all who turned up on the different day to support the team and a special thanks to the other panel members, even though they didn’t get a game they still came along to support the team.
