MARKING OF CARDS

Golf Ireland guidelines have stated that all 3 handicaps must be recorded on cards for competition and casual rounds for handicap purposes. To avoid disqualification you must record your h/cap index, playing h/cap and most importantly the course h/cap, all of these are available on the Golf Ireland app and also on screen

when you log in for competitions. It is also important not to enter a zero for stableford competitions as it interferes with standard scratch, if you blank a hole just record the shots as the computer will adjust accordingly. All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in agreement with the player before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

NEW MEMBER DEALS

JIMMY BRUEN

Commiserations to our Bruen Team who were narrowly defeated by Clonmel Golf Club away on Saturday in the Munster Quarter finals.  In inclement conditions our team put up a great show and there were some terrific matches.  It proved to be a very close contest, but in the end, it wasn’t to be our day as the home side took the honours.  Well done to our players and management for the effort put in throughout the tournament and best of luck to Clonmel as they progress.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 24th July 2022

JIMMY BRUEN

All roads lead to Clonmel Golf Club next Saturday 30th July at 3pm when we take on Clonmel in the Munster Quarter final.  It’s a great achievement for our club to have advanced so far in this competition. The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes is huge from running trials to selecting the team and the subs, the hours that are put in are unreal. With that in mind we are hoping that a large number of members will travel to support the team to show appreciation for the hard work John White and Mattie Murray and their team have put in to reach the Quarter finals and represent the Gold Coast Club with pride.  Best of luck to all involved.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 17th July 2022

JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL GOLF DAY

If Carlsberg did golf, then they would run the John McGrath Charity day as this year’s event was probably the best one ever. Glorious sunshine with a slight breeze was the order of the day.

The buzz around the kiosk from 8.15 on was electric as players gathered to find out the format of the competition and what tees they would be playing off. The catering crews were also arriving and getting things ready to feed the hungry golfers as they arrived at the food stations. By 9am all the players were on the course and in action. The smell of the BBQ was wafting over the course and tempting all the golfers, especially those who missed breakfast.

As the day progressed the craic improved, and golfers were enjoying the culinary expertise of those providing the burgers, sausages at the 9th tee and the sandwiches and tea and coffee at the kiosk. Some unbelievable golf was being played by most teams and this was reflected in the scoring we were treated to a beautiful meal in the hotel where the presentation took place.

We were joined by the McGrath family and by Fr Jerry Condon PP, we also had Paula French from Dungarvan Community Hospital who gave us an insight to where the monies raised would be going.  Sean McGrath then spoke of his father the late John McGrath and how he would be so happy to see the turn out for this special day.   Both our Captains spoke thanking every one for taking part a special word of thanks to Bob O’Brien and his committee John White, Maurice Fennell and Michael Wall, our kiosk staff for their help and green keeping staff for having the course in fabulous condition as always, and to the ladies committee for the beautiful sandwiches they provided. Thanks also to Tim O’Driscoll and family for looking after the food on the 9th, Michael Wall for the burgers and sausages, Liam Clancy for Food Transportation, Currans Foods for the buns and rolls, the hotel staff for their hard work and anyone else that helped in any way it is much appreciated so a big thank you to everyone.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Rosie Murphy (11) who came third with a very respectable score of 35pts in the Irish Golfer Series, Ladies Section last Sunday in Dromoland Castle GC. While it is a fabulous course, it’s not for the feint hearted and requires precision golf, no problem to our Rosie!! Her prize was the new Taylor Made Rescue Wood, so watch this space!!

Congratulations also to Lorraine Troy who won the Annual Ladies Open 36 hole competition at the Cunnigar Pitch & Putt Club last week after claiming Best Nett in the National Senior Stroke Play in Fermoy P&P Club recently!! This is another lady on fire, especially with the short game, it’s great to have this calibre of player in the club and we wish them every success for the year. Well Done!!

JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL GOLF DAY

On Wednesday 13th July, the club held a 36 hole golf event in honour of our founder John McGrath with a massive entry of 22 teams. This was a fun event, with food and refreshments in plentiful supply throughout the 36 holes ranging from tea/coffee, sandwiches, bars, water, minerals and beer at the carpark to a BBQ at the 9th tee with a plentiful supply of refreshments. A sit down meal was provided in the hotel after which presentation of prizes took place. The winning team which was an all ladies team resulted in rip-roaring applause, so congrats to: L. Pres. Ger Hallinan, L. V/Capt. Rosie Murphy, H/Cap Sec. Mary Kiely and Eileen Good with a score of 194pts

The money raised on the day exceeded €6,000 between entry fees and donations which will be used to purchase special chairs for the Palliative Care Ward in Dungarvan

Community Hospital. Director of Nursing Paula French accepted the donation with grateful appreciation of the club’s efforts and the show of solidarity from the members.

Our grateful thanks to our many sponsors who donate every time and help make these charity events run so smoothly, it is much appreciated!! A special word of thanks to Bob and his committee who organised the whole event and had it running like clockwork.

Thanks to Ann and the McGrath family who were ever present throughout the day to give a hand where it was needed, it was really appreciated.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing you back on the fairways very soon!! Our Lady Captain Isobel and our secretary Elaine, pulled out the stops to ensure everyone had a fun and enjoyable day out. After lunch the teams took off in glorious sunshine to play an impeccable course, thanks to the ground staff!! We had an eagle on the first Par 4 when Helena’s drive stopped short of the green and Karen chipped it into the hole, a great start for team 3!! The longest drive was also on the first hole which was claimed by Katie Kiely amid shouts and clapping, nearest the pin on the 9th par 3 which is a difficult hole was claimed by Karen Darcy, a great feat!!

After a fabulous dinner, presentation of prizes took place with a prize for everyone in the audience and a raffle for a €50 voucher for Faithlegg GC which was kindly sponsored by the pro-shop and won by our Captain’s Prize winner Leanne Bumster. CAPTAINS WEEKEND 3rd, 4th and 5th JUNE 2022

What a great weekend we had here at the Gold Coast well done to all involved in making it such a great success to both Captains, to all the players from the gents and ladies clubs, the hotel for the beautiful food and our wonderful kiosk and ground keeping staff who keep the show on the road day in day out and most of all too our two popular winners namely John Hallinan and Leanne Bumster well done on your wins.

JUVENILE CLINIC A BIG SUCCESS

A visit to the Gold Coast Golf Club last week by Gold Ireland’s Jennifer Hickey (Development & Club Support Officer-Munster) proved a great success. Organised by President Frank Mulvihill, eleven adult Leaders participated in the course aimed at the development of Juvenile golfers at the club. The aim – that each juvenile golfer be facilitated to reach their potential in a friendly and enjoyable surrounding.

The course was practical and all those in attendance put their pitching wedges and putters into action in a series of warm-up exercises, chipping skills and putting games. It is fair to say there were some very competitive Leaders present on the night!

When working with juveniles Safety is a priority and Jennifer demonstrated some fail-proof methods that should form the basis of all activities. The clinic comprised 6 main topics: 1. Equipment zones. 2. Warm Up Games. 3. Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). 4. Safety. 5. Chipping exercises, and 6. Putting exercises. Feedback from the session was very positive with participants admitting they had found it very enjoyable and each had lots of fun. The leaders will now apply what they learned at the clinic with the Juvenile golfers at the Gold Coast.

MARKING OF CARDS

Golf Ireland guidelines have stated that all 3 handicaps must be recorded on cards for competition and casual rounds for handicap purposes. To avoid disqualification you must record your h/cap index, playing h/cap and most importantly the course h/cap, all of these are available on the Golf Ireland app and also on screen when you log in for competitions. It is also important not to enter a zero for stableford competitions as it interferes with standard scratch, if you blank a hole just record the shots as the computer will adjust accordingly. All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in agreement with the player before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 5th June 2022

CAPTAINS PRIZE 2022

Our two captains Seamus and Isobel held their competitions this weekend.  In some beautiful weather on Friday some great scores were recorded and the competition continued on Saturday when the weather was not so kind but the scoring was once again very high.  Our final took place on Sunday morning, on a very overcast day 42 players took to the course with a shot gun start. There was great scoring once again but the man from Tooraneena completed a great final round to claim his first ever Captain’s prize, a great achievement for our very popular winner John Hallinan. We then retired to the Gold Coast Hotel where we enjoyed a beautiful meal and our prize giving took place. Our Lady President Geradine got proceedings under way where she gave a lovely speech about Isobel and they went on to present the Lady Captain’s prizes.  Next up was our President Frank who delivered a nice speech about our popular Captain Seamus.  Captain Seamus then spoke thanking the Men’s committee for all their help, the Hotel for the lovely meal, his family for all their support and John White for asking him to take on the role as Captain for 2022.  He thanked Bob who as always provided the PA system and the photos for the papers.  He continued and thanked the kiosk staff Irene, Brian and Mark and the Grounds keeping staff for the up keep of our fantastic course. Well done to Seamus and Isobel on a great weekend.

CAPTAINS SCRAMBLE

Wednesday nights scramble was a great success.  There was a brilliant turnout with a great atmosphere and all the members enjoyed themselves.  Many thanks to the staff, committee and volunteers for their work behind the scenes with the entries, draw, scorecard checking and prize giving. Particular mention to our excellent BBQ chefs Maurice and Aisling for serving up delicious burgers, hot dogs and refreshments, keeping us fed and watered throughout the evening.  It was a lovely start to the Captains’ weekend and set the scene for a fabulous weekend of golf.

LADIES NOTES

CAPTAIN’S SCRAMBLE

Our Captain’s scramble which took place on Wed 1st June was a resounding success with a very large entry in glorious sunny conditions. Our resident chef Maurice and his helper Aisling were in charge of the cooking, needless to say there was an abundance of fabulous treats on offer, burgers, hot dogs and unlimited vino!! There were so many prizes, they almost had one for everyone in the audience. It was a most enjoyable start to the Captain’s weekend, and a huge thanks to all involved in the smooth running of the event!!

LADY CAPTAIN’S PRIZE

The Captain’s weekend which was hosted by our Captains Seamus and Isobel over the June Bank Holiday was a huge success. The qualifying rounds on Friday with perfect conditions brought in some very low scoring, but not to be outdone the ladies who went out on Saturday morning in drizzly conditions and our afternoon ladies in heavy rain still brought in some fabulous scores. It was all to play for on Sunday with the shotgun start at 10am with the lowest scores getting preference on the tees. Everything went off very smoothly with the women using

the front tees and the men using the back while the weather decided to hold off until all were back in the clubhouse. Our hardworking and efficient Lady Captain Isobel has left no stone unturned since she took up office and we were not surprised with her efforts of making sure everybody had plenty food and drink at the halfway station manned by the ladies. Her fantastic home bakes were being tested by the men, who maintained they had to go through quality control several times!!

Isobel’s prize was a fabulous painting commissioned by Inseun Kim, originally from South Korea but now living near Rathgormack and who is also a member of the club. Inseun, a registered artist in Ireland and who specialised in Asian Silk Canvas is now into general and abstract studies and is producing some stunning pieces!!

Delicious food was served in the Dugout Bar and Presentation of Prizes took place immediately afterwards. President Frank opened the proceedings and welcomed everybody to the Presentation of Prizes for the ladies and gents. Captain Seamus took up the lead to acknowledge how wonderful it felt to belong to such a wonderful club and how proud he was to be Captain.

Our Lady President Ger welcomed all and introduced our Lady Captain Isobel who was delighted and excited that all went without a hitch and the rain stayed away. The prize giving was a very lively affair with lots of shouting and clapping for each recipient, but the loudest was for the winners of both the ladies and gents which was John Hallinan and Leanne Bumster. Both were most deserving of the accolades as John went round level par on Sunday carding a 65 nett and a 70 on Saturday to claim victory. Leanne had two fabulous rounds on Saturday and Sunday with a total of 139 to claim her victory. Many congratulations to them and to all who participated to make it yet another memorable occasion!!
