COURSE HANDICAP CHANGES FROM 1st APRIL

The “Course Rating minus Par” change is an update to the World Handicap System (WHS) that took effect in Great Britain and Ireland on April 1st 2024. It’s a new way of calculating handicaps, where the difference between the Course Rating and the Par of the course is taken into account. Here’s how it works: Course Rating is the measure of the difficulty of a course for a scratch golfer. Par is the standard number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to make for a particular course. Under the new system, your Course Handicap is calculated using the following formula:

Course Handicap=Handicap Index × (113÷Slope Rating) + (Course Rating-Par) If the Course Rating is higher than the Par, you’ll receive additional strokes. Conversely, if the Par is higher, you’ll lose strokes. This adjustment aims to make the game fairer and allows players to compete from different tees without needing an adjustment. Updated course handicap tables are displayed at the first tee noticeboard or can be checked by consulting your Golf Ireland App.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 24th March 2024

JOHN WHITE CARPENTRY SPONSORED WINTER LEAGUE 2023/24

Our Winter League reached its climax yesterday Sunday 24th March here at Goldcoast Golf Club where Ballinacourty did battle against reigning Champions Nire/Touraneena.  It began at 10am with the first pairings away.  After three hours the teams were very close with two matches going to the 19th and 20th holes.  The nail-biting final concluded with the Nire/Touraneena emerging victorious under the leadership of their Captain Darren Williams, and they claimed the title of Champions for the 7th time.  Well done to runners up Ballinacourty, led by their Captain Johnny Hughes. Following the matches the teams retired to the Hotel for the presentation ceremony and a beautiful meal.

Our Captain David assisted by President John got the presentations underway where he delivered a lovely speech in which he thanked the people behind the scenes whose work goes unnoticed namely Irene and Brian in the Kisok, Martin Morris, Nicholas Power and the Hotel and Greenkeeping staff.

He praised our wonderful sponsor John White, highlighting his dedication and constant promotion of our Club wherever he goes.  I can confirm that John White Carpentry will once again sponsor the league for the 2024/25 season, for this we very grateful.

President John then presented the prizes to the top individual scorers in the league, a full list of names will follow next week.   He then presented Johnny Hughes and his Ballinacourty team with the Winter League runners up matchplay prize and Darren Williams and his Nire/Touraneena team with both the league group winners prize and the overall matchplay winners prize.

We extend our gratitude to every Captain and player whose dedication continues to make the winter league a resounding success here at the Goldcoast Golf Club year after year. We eagerly await the 2024/25 season!

MIXED FOURSOMES 2024

There is a new format in operation this year. A qualifying round will be played on Sunday 7th April, it will be a stroke-play competition and the top 8 teams will qualify for the match-play section in a seeded draw, with the top team playing the eight team, second playing seventh etc. The mixed team selectors have been requested to submit their pairings first and after they are entered remaining players can pick their own partners and enter them on the timesheet. Entry fee per player is €7 and can be paid on the day of the competition. Players can also enter the competition even if they do not wish to partake in the match-play section. The timesheet is now open.

The Flogas Mixed Foursomes Inter-Club Competition runs this year as normal.

– The team consists of 8 players, 4 x foursomes.

– Players must have 20 score cards as of 1/1/24.

– Pair combined in no lower than 19.0 and no higher than 27.0 although you may drop down.

– Age must be over 18 as of the 1/1/24.

Also a new competition has been introduced call the Irish Mixed Fourball

– The team consists of 8 players, 4 x fourballs.

– Players must have 20 score cards as of 1/1/24.

– Individual criteria no lower than 10.0 as of 1/1/24

– Combined no lower than 27.0 or higher than 40.0 however dropping down is permitted.

– Age must be over 18 as of 1/1/24.

We are inviting all members to get involved in our club mixed competition on Sunday, April 7th.   We are asking interested golfers to find their own partners and compete for a place on the team. This is a new club competition so even if you’re not interested in playing on a team, come along and join in anyway.

The mixed team from last year have been paired together due to the handicap requirements but this does not mean that the team has already been picked. The competition on the 7th of April will determine eligibility for the teams so please find yourselves a partner that satisfies the handicap requirements and we’ll see you all on the 7th.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above, please get in touch with John Hallinan or Aisling Fennell on 085 7587777.  Best of luck!

CONDOLENCES

We offer our heartfelt condolences to Darren O’ Droma and family on the sad passing of his father Seamus which occurred during the week.  May God have mercy on his gentle soul.

GOLD COASTERS

The group took themselves to the Metropolis of Kilmacthomas last week for a fun day out. Our first venture was walking the very scenic and historical Loop with our tour guide Margaret, which proved to be a huge hit with everyone. Many photos were taken of the historical viaduct and landscape by the river and the many local gems along the way!!

After our walk we sojourned to one of the many fine and distinguished eateries of the area for a sumptuous lunch, which was enjoyed by all. Thanks again to Anne for her organisational skills, and to our guide and photographers on the day. It was a brilliant day out.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 25th February 2024

WINTER LEAGUE 2024

Our Winter League kindly sponsored by John White Carpentry has now reached the final furlong with the Nire/Touraneena pipping Dunhill to claim the league section.  But now the fight begins to see who will be crowned Winner League winners for 2024 with six teams contesting this spot once again.  The Winter League was a huge success with a large number of rounds being played in spite of challenging weather conditions over the winter months but as always the course held up for us to enjoy our golf. We want to thank the green keeping staff for keeping the course in such great condition.  Thank you to Irene and Brian for updating the scores each week, to the team Captains for all their hard work and to each member who took part in the league.  It’s the members that make the Goldcoast the fantastic place it is. The line up for the Quarter finals next Sunday 3rd March is as follows.  On the tee box at 10am are Dungarvan v Ballinacourty, followed at 11.30a.m. by Abbeyside V’s Stradbally.  The winners of the Quarter finals will meet Nire/Touraneena and Dunhill in the semi-finals scheduled to take place the following Sunday March 10th.  Best of luck to all involved.

CONDOLENCES

The club wish to offer our condolences to Tony Fitzgerald and family on the sad passing of his mother Bridget which occurred during the week. May God have mercy on her gentle soul.

HANDICAP CHANGES

Further updates on Handicap changes as from the 1st April 2024 or when summer rules begin.  Course Handicap is the number of shots the golfer receives for the tee set they are going to play. Currently in Ireland, England and Wales this value is calculated to a decimal and then rounded for the golfer, which is the value they use when playing golf for handicap purposes (both general play and competition golf).

As of April 2024, for competition purposes, the calculated and “unrounded” Course Handicap will be carried through to the Playing Handicap™ calculation using machine precision*. For General Play scores, the golfer will continue to use the calculated and “rounded” Course Handicap. The Playing Handicap will be rounded to a whole number at the end of the calculation.

Eighteen holes are in play; winter rules are in operation. Placing on both fairways and rough. We ask members and visitors alike to please observe the yellow markers around the greens and to repair pitch marks on them even if they are not your own to keep the greens in the condition the club is renowned for. Well done to our green keeping staff for maintaining the course in excellent condition. While on the course we ask members and visitors alike to please shout fore if your ball goes in the direction you did not intend it to go, please shout fore left or right to keep everyone safe.
