Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 31st May

Notes 31st May
Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 31st May 2020
Another great week weather wise for those within 5km of the course and able to play. Come the 8th of June more members will be able to participate when the distance from home becomes 20km.

New Members Welcome
We are delighted to welcome so many new members to the club just now. Committee & Club Members will be making themselves available over the next few weeks to accompany new members on the course. Helping with getting handicaps organised, going through the basic rules and the requirements on the course. Members at the Gold Coast will do everything they can to make you welcome so feel free to put your name down anytime with anyone and enjoy the camaraderie, the game and the stunning scenery.
Members old and new are reminded to check out the notice board adjacent to the first tee regarding local rules, dress codes etc
We are starting this Tues & Wed evening (5pm-7pm) a members evening where members will be able to play with some of the new members to facilitate getting handicaps. Please book your time on the BRS system. We will be doing this for the next few weeks

From next week it is proposed to publish one rule of golf per week. It will help new members learning the game and act as a refresher for existing members. That said golfers are forever learning about their game and encounter many rules in every round.

COURSE MAINTAINANCE
Huge credit to the course staff during the Covid 19 lockdown to keep the course in such fine condition. It’s a credit to all involved. When you get back playing you will see the great work that has been done by volunteers on the bunkers too. The results have been stunning is what the feedback says. There are still a few bunkers to do so if you have a couple of free hours please contact the kiosk and they will arrange for your availability.

COMPETITIONS
From 8th June, we’re allowed Club competitions, so we’ll be running an 18 hole Singles Club competition on Tuesday’s (instead of the Seniors). We will have a similar competition on Friday’s, Saturdays and Sundays
There will also be a 9-hole or 10-hole ongoing competition running for the summer (format and fees will be finalised over the next couple of weeks)

I am delighted to let you all know we are now open for business again after the initial lockdown, and the course is in magnificent condition. It now looks rested and fresh without the divots and pitch marks, it’s a pure delight!! Our undivided praise to our fantastic course staff for the work throughout the last few months which is very evident from the first tee to the eighteenth green, well done!! While the Corona Virus has really put the clampers on competitions, meetings and social gatherings within the golfing sector, we are back on the fairways since Monday 18 th May getting plenty of fresh air and playing a few holes within the 5km distance for now. From Monday 8 th June the 20km distance comes into play and hopefully we will see a few more ladies as the restrictions are lifted in the next few weeks. Notes 25th May 2020
Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 24th May 2020
Monday 18th May 2020, a day many in this country will never forget. It was the first day that the Covid 19 restrictions were initially eased. Luckily, Golf was one of the things to benefit, and so many happy Golfers took to the fairways at the Gold Coast, on Monday and throughout the week. Presently the Course can only allow people from 5km radius, but this will be extended to 20km on June 8th, so many more members will get back playing the game they enjoy.
The course itself is in magnificent condition and great credit must go to the staff for maintaining their very high standards….well done. When you get back playing you will see the great work that has been done by volunteers on the bunkers too. The results have been stunning is what the feedback says. There are still a few bunkers to do so if you have a couple of free hours please contact the kiosk and they will arrange for your availability.
At this point I would like to welcome our new members to the club. Brilliant news so many new members have come on board. Players at the Gold Coast will do everything to make you welcome so feel free to put your name down anytime and with anyone and enjoy the camaraderie, the game, and the stunning scenery.

CORONAVIRUS COVID-19

The Golfing Union of Ireland, Irish Ladies Golf Union and the Confederation of Golf in Ireland ask that all golf clubs note, act upon and continually monitor the advice and guidance issued by the Health Service Executive (Republic of Ireland) and the National Health Service (Northern Ireland) in relation to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. For you and the protection of others we ask for cooperation in adhering to HSE Guidelines, social distancing advice and other precautionary measures we have taken. In the interest of safety for our staff, members and visitors our first preference from now on is that debit card/contactless or credit card payment is used for competition fees, green fees and all other transactions. Alternatively, members are requested to put the right amount of cash in an envelope and write their name, date and fee on the front of it and post into a dedicated box in the Kiosk. Going forward we have decided to restructure the timesheets into 10 min intervals where possible or insert buffers times as required. It may also be necessary to implement a temporary local rule permitting computer score return only for singles competitions thereby eliminating the use of scorecards. We will act upon and continually monitor the advice and guidance issued by the Health Service Executive (Republic of Ireland). These are unprecedented and anxious times for everyone. It is important that we all work together, following the advice of experts, in controlling the spread of COVID-19 infection. Thank you for your co-operation, stay safe. HSE: www.hse.ie

People will be aware of the period of restriction announced by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in respect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following on from this the GUI \ ILGU issued a joint statement which came into effect at 6.00 p.m. on 12 th March and which can be viewed on https://www.golfnet.ie/news/golfnet/4622/statement-on-covid-19-from-gui-and-ilgu.

The restrictions (until Sunday 29th March) do not prevent club competitions or casual rounds of golf taking place, however we need to be cognisant of the social nature of our game and how this element of it is impacted. Golf is a great sport for people generally to get out and about, exercise and enjoy fresh air. It is played in an outdoor setting where the risk of contracting COVID-19 is low.

We will act upon and continually monitor the advice and guidance issued by the Health Service Executive (Republic of Ireland) and the National Health Service and Public Health (Northern Ireland) in relation to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. It is important that we all work together, following the advice of experts, in controlling the spread of COVID-19 infection. Be sensible and stay safe. HSE: www.hse.ie

Reverend Father Connie Kelleher P.P.

Long time popular member of the Gold Coast, Fr. Connie, very sadly passed on to his eternal reward last week. Father Connie was a very enthusiastic sportsman all his life and had great interest in GAA and golf as well as many other sports. But his huge contribution to life was his ministry to the people of Tourneena and the Nire and all the parishes that he had served in previously. His popularity with these people was boundless and they will have lost not just a Parish Priest but also a great friend. To all his family we extend our sincere sympathies. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Deise League:

This year’s Deise League will commence shortly and Bruen selector, John White and Purcell selectors Michael Wall and Brian Dunbar will be delighted to hear from any player interested in playing in these competitions this year. The Deise League comprises teams from Faithlegg, Gold Coast Tramore and Waterford Castle.

Gold Coast play Tramore at the Gold Coast on Saturday 14th March, players to be at the venue at 9.45 a.m.

Condolences:

The Captains and all members of the Gold Coast would like to offer their sympathies to Rafael Alvarez on the death in Spain of his mother last week.

Winter League Semi-Finals:

Nire/Tourneena and Ballinacourty had real battles on their hands to reach the final as both faced very stiff opposition from Abbeyside and Copper Coast respectively. In the Nire/Tourneena v Abbeyside one match went all the ways to the 28th Hole with Neil dermody taking the honours. The overall match went down to the final match before Darren Williams sank the winning putt on the 17th hole. Also this match featured a game where the two players had reached over 160 years between them and this match went all the ways to the 18th hole. In the second semi-final Ballinacourty had to come from behind and win the final three matches, all on the 18th hole to clinch their spot in the final.

The addition of three ladies to each team has added an extra impetus to the league and hopefully more ladies will join in next year.

John White Carpentry Winter League Final:

With a novel pairing of the Nire/Tourneena and Ballinacourty in the final this year, with both teams not having won the league for a good many years, there was an added element of excitement prior to the start of the match. The Nire/Tourneena team had a two match advantage as they won both midweek matches going into the final on Sunday:

Representing the Nire/Tourneena: Brian Fahey, Captain, Barry Power, Michael Wall, Tom Reynolds, Larry Whelan, Mick Cronin, Jody Hallinan, Martin Morris, Mairead Ryan (Sub for Noirin Darcy), Leanne Bumster, Aisling Fennell, Darren Williams, Gearoid Breathnach, Rafael Alvarez, Darren O’Droma and Neil Dermody.

Representing Ballinacourty: John Hughes, Captain, Frank Mulvihill, Bob O’Brien, Jerome Maye, Conan Watt, Paddy Walsh, Jimmy O’Dwyer, Seamus O’Connell, Martina Corkery, Esther McGuckian, Mairead Manning, Mark Lenihan, Alan Landers, Dave O’Connor, John Ahearne and Seanie Lenihan.

Conditions weren’t too bad when the first of the players teed off at 9.30 on Sunday and it wasn’t long before all 14 matches were on the course. After 9 holes Ballinacourty looked to be trouble in a lot of matches and this pattern followed through with the Nire/Tourneena eventually claiming enough points to clinch the match around just short of 1.30 p.m. Congratulations to Brian Fahey and the Nire/Tourneena team on their victory and well done to Johnny Hughes and the Ballinacourty team on reaching the final.

Following the match both teams adjourned to the Gold Coast for the post match meal, presentation of prizes and celebrations.

With well over 1,000 games played in the league, it has proved, once again, to be an outstanding success. Great efforts were put in by many players to ensure that their respective teams qualified for the match-play. Huge thanks to our Captain, John White, for sponsoring the league. John always had a huge interest in the Gold Coast Golf Club and is one of our better sponsors. Thanks again John.

Moorings Winter League

The winter league has now finished with some surprising results, after a long battle between the Suir, Liffey and the Nore from the beginning, the Suir have come out on top to reap their rewards!! The three teams were in contention at all times with the placings changing on a weekly basis, the team captains, Breda, Irene and Mary K left nothing to chance and encouragement was foremost after every round result. There was a tremendous effort put in with some of the team members recording up to 20 rounds each giving themselves a chance of reaching their goal!!

Congratulations to the Suir team with a superb score of 837pts and to the Liffey who took second position with a great score of 800pts. Well done to everybody who took part and thank you for your co-operation in participating in the new format which proved very successful!! Presentation of prizes will be at a later date.
