Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 4th November 2018:

Winter League 2018/2019

Our 2018/2019 Winter League kicked off last week with both a great turnout and excellent scores to match. The format of this year’s league as was evidenced last year lends itself to getting players to play and that certainly happened last week. Apart from Saturday, players made use of the fine weather conditions all week and between Sat 27th Oct and Sun 4th Nov, 190 scores were recorded

In that Tom White has rallied his troops again this year with 33 rounds played totalling 1,248 points(Av 37.8pts), followed by Nicholas Fitzgerald’s Deise with 1,059 points(av 34.2pts) over 31 rounds and Pat Power’s Dungarvan with 1,057 points (34.1pts)over 31 rounds. Nire/Tourneena and Copper Coast got 28 and 27 rounds in respectively but Johnny Hughes Ballinacourty and Geoff Collins Abbeyside will have to get busy with the snap chat to mobilise their troops. Although Ballinacourty only got 22 rounds in, their average score equalled Dunhill’s with 37.8pts

No team got all players out yet but Dungarvan,Ballinacourty, Tourneena & Deise got 13 out of 14 players out and Dunhill, Copper Coast & Abbeyside got 12 out of 14

Good to see the ladies doing well with Rosie Murphy top of the list shooting 38,40 & 42pts , with all seven ladies getting their rounds in

Well done to all for participating and getting out there and hoping the weather will stay favourable to getting more rounds in over the coming weeks

We presently have all teams filled with a few names on the standby list should substitutes be required. To allow a little more time to compile scores before the weekly notes on a Monday, the 1st week will start on Saturday 27th October-Sunday 28th October & Monday 29th October to Friday 2nd November

The final or 15th week will finish on Friday 8th February,2019 after which the match play rounds will commence.

As last year, the 10 best cards to count from 11 out of 14 players, which can be played any day of the week and as many times as you want. As history dictates, the teams and players who play the most rounds generally come out on top…so the moral of the story is the more you play the better chance you have!!

Entry fee is once again €25 which all goes to the prizes and the daily competition fee is €7 for the first 10 rounds and €5 thereafter.

To date we haven’t secured a sponsor for this year’s League as the Premium Butcher are bowing out this year. For the last number of years the Premium Butcher/Dawn Meats have being invaluable sponsors to the Winter League and our club and members are hugely appreciative of their contributions in the past and wish to thank them sincerely for supporting past Winter leagues.

As mentioned last week, the Ladies club run only a 10 hole winter league but to facilitate ladies who would like to play 18 holes over the winter (in addition to their 10 holes WL), each of our teams includes one lady member also. The same rules applies as the men, best 10 cards etc . In the match play section the ladies would play each other. This means that this year we’ll have 7 teams of 14, giving us 98 participants, the highest in a good few years. In an age of merging Golfing Unions between the GUI & ILGU we see this a step forward in bringing our already close Mens & Ladies clubs that bit closer again.

The full rules on display in the kiosk

Men’s Club AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Men’s Club will be held on Monday 5th November at 8.00 p.m. at Goldcoast Golf Hotel.

This year due to a number of retirees we have a number of positions vacant.

All club members are encouraged to think about getting people to fill these positions. If anyone would like to contact the Kiosk, more information can be given regarding the vacant positions. A little work is required but we feel the benefits of being involved and having a say in the running of the club far outweigh the costs of affording a little time to the club. The nomination sheet is posted in the kiosk.

For the last number of years the Premium Butcher/Dawn Meats have being invaluable sponsors to the Winter League and our club and members are hugely appreciative of their contributions in the past and wish to thank them sincerely for supporting past Winter leagues.

As an add on to this year’s League a proposal has come from the Ladies club who run only a 10 hole winter league that for Ladies who would prefer to play 18 holes over the winter (in addition to their 10 holes WL), to have their scores incorporated within our league also. They would be subject to the same rules as the men, best 10 cards etc This would mean that one lady would be allocated to each of the 7 teams making up 7 teams of 14 players participating. In the match play section the ladies would play each other. In an age of merging Golfing Unions between the GUI & ILGU we see this proposal as a step forward in bringing our already close Mens & Ladies clubs that bit closer again.

Inter-County Hurlers at Gold Coast:

The Society for former Inter-County Hurlers held their AGM on Friday night in the Gold Coast Hotel and on Saturday morning they played a scramble in the Gold Coast Golf Club. Later on Saturday all the players and their partners met for a remembrance mass at 7.15 p.m. and after which all sat down for a meal which was then followed by dancing and a sing song.

The hurlers gave a special presentation to John McGrath who after 35 years of serving as the associations secretary retired from office at this years AGM

Goldcoast Gc Notes 17th Sept 2018

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 17th September 2018:

Changing Faces at the Goldcoast:

Last Friday Brendan O’Brien(aka Bob) retired after almost 17 years.

Members, friends and family gathered in the members bar last Friday evening for an informal gathering to mark his retirement.

On the night John McGrath thanked Brendan for his dedicated and loyal service to the club and for the efficient and competent way he ran the kiosk

Brendan takes with him best wishes from all our members and friends far and wide, thanks for the countless great memories, gags, jokes and friendships

Not to forget the many fundraising golf events that he dreamt up and successfully organised, many charities are the huge beneficiaries from his work

Stepping into Brendan’s shoes will be Irene Lynch, presently secretary/manager at Dungarvan Golf Club. Irene will be taking up her new role in a month or so and brings with her almost 20 years experience at both Mallow and Dungarvan Golf Clubs

Also arriving will be Aaron Crotty from Ring who has experience from both local neighbouring clubs as well as spending time on golf courses in the States

On behalf of all here, we would like to wish them both the very best in their new positions here in the Gold Coast. We know that the members here will make them welcome and give them all the support that they need in finding their feet. Exciting times at the Goldcoast

End of Season Dinner and Presentation:
