Dinner with live music for atmospheric conditions was simply delicious and enjoyed by all. The management and staff were superb and have to be commended for attention to detail.

Breakfast the following morning was a delicious array of food to set us up for our journey to Carton House for the final day of the KPMG Irish Ladies Open. For many, this was the highlight of the week-end seeing Leona and Georgia in close proximity from fabulous vantage points.

Fortunately two of our ladies became television stars on the day having been grabbed on camera on the 18th green!! It was a fabulous break away and thanks to the organisers Breda V and Lady Capt. Elaine who did a magnificent job.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 18th August 2024

PRESIDENTS PRIZE 2024

Our President’s Prize took centre stage over the weekend and what great weekend it turned out to be, played in beautiful conditions on a fantastic course here at the Gold Coast Golf Club.  Friday was the first qualifying day with great scoring being recorded and by the evening Eoin Manfield led the field.  On Saturday, the second day of qualifying, things changed at the top with Darragh Power taking the lead followed closely by another talented young man namely AJ Hayes.

Sunday was the day of the final and from early morning the car park was a hive of activity with players arriving, cards been distributed and groups making their way to their assigned tee boxes for the shot gun start.  Again, the sun shone brightly on us and some fantastic golf was played. As the dust settled and the cards were tallied up, a very popular winner was on his way to winning another Major.  And no one deserved it more; his dedication to the club has been un wavering down through the years as both a player, a committee member, as Captain and as the sponsor of the winter league.   Huge Congratulations to the winner of the Presidents Prize for 2024 John White.

We retired to the hotel for a lovely meal and Presentation ceremony and were joined by the ladies club for the prize giving.  Lady Captain Elaine Nash got proceedings under way and introduced Lady President Anne Keane.  We congratulate Lady President Anne on a hugely successful weekend and say well done to the overall winner of the Lady President’s prize Mary Fennell.

Captain David O’Connor then spoke very highly of our popular President John Hallinan and his work in promoting the club down through the years. President John then delivered a well prepared speech.  In it he thanked Rafael for giving him the honour of the office of President, the Hotel staff for the wonderful service and meal, Green keeping staff for the up keep of our little gem of a course, the McGrath family for the use of Goldcoast Golf Club and Resort, and his family especially his wife Esther and three daughters for their support during the year.  He also thanked the committee who organised the weekend, Brendan O’Brien, Micheal Wall, John White, Frank Mulvihill, David O’Connor, Brian Fahey and Irene Lynch in the kiosk for all their help.  He then presented flowers to Lady President Anne and the ladies Committee presented flowers to President John’s wife Esther. We thank Presidents John and Anne for a great weekend.

MARY FENNELL WINS THE PRESIDENTS PRIZE

Our Presidents John and Anne were very busy in the run up to their very special weekend. The prestigious event took off on Wednesday evening with the Presidents Scramble and BBQ which was a fantastic success with a large turnout over 13 holes.

There was great fun and banter on the way round with the BBQ stationed as normal at the first tee with a new team of caterers! The burgers with all the trimmings were delicious as usual, thanks a mill to Aisling, Rosie and especially Martin who surpassed himself with his cooking skills! The refreshments for the night were served by Esther who made sure everyone was attended to efficiently.

There were some fantastic scores returned on the night and all results are posted above in men’s notes. Thanks a mill to our catering team who are a very important part of the scrambles and to the men’s committee members who organised the event.

The President’s Prize qualifiers over Friday and Saturday brought in some great scores on both days, while the conditions on Saturday were more favourable.

Sunday started with a shotgun start @ 10am in beautiful and perfect golfing conditions which reflected the scores returned, some which were phenomenal.

The presentation of prizes took place after the golf to a large turnout of members, family and friends with our Lady Captain Elaine opening the proceedings. She thanked everyone for playing and supporting Anne and spoke very highly of her commitment to the club and the several roles she has played from her joining the club in 2011 to date.

Anne spoke of what an honour it was to be our President and thanked everyone for making her weekend such a success. The winner of the prestigious prize with a fabulous score over two days was our wonderful and competent secretary Mary who gave a wonderful acceptance speech and was delighted to be the recipient of such a wonderful prize.

Not to be outdone, John White who is no stranger to the winners circle was once again the winner of John’s beautiful trophy. Congratulations and well done to John and Mary and to all who featured in the prizes over the weekend and also to both John and Anne for a wonderful weekend of golf, music and great craic!

In the early morning breeze, on a beautiful sunny day the smell of the Barbecue was received with much delight from players as they reached the 11th green.  We thank Bob O’Brien’s family, namely his wife and daughter who cooked the burgers and sausages all day and which were kindly supplied as always by Micheal Wall and other ingredients by John White.  The food trail continued to the 18th where the wonderful ladies from the club had tea/coffee, sandwiches and lovely cream cakes on offer. We say a big thank you to all the ladies involved.  In the late evening, we retired to the Hotel for a sit-down meal and presentation of prizes. The organiser of the event Bob O’Brien spoke of its success over the last 3 years and the money that has been raised for the palliative care unit in Dungarvan Community Hospital.  He thanked his hard working team for all their help during the day Maurice Fennell, John White, Michael Wall and Johnny Hughes. He thanked Mark Knowles and his team at the Hotel for the beautiful meal and wonderful service as always and Mark Linehan and his team including Rob and the green keeping staff. He then introduced Sean McGrath who spoke on behalf of the McGrath family and of course his late father John who was the man behind this little gem of a course that we call home today. We heard from Paula French from Dungarvan Community Hospital who thanked the members for their continued supported and explained where the funding raised will be going this year. It’s days like this that make you proud to be a member of such a great club as the Goldcoast Golf Club, where lifetime friends are made.

The winners on the day were as follows:

1st Nicholas Power, Alan Darcy, Darragh Power, and Micheal Kavanagh

2nd Neil Dermody, Corey Roche, Adam O’Riordan and John Callanan

3rd Lar Whelan, Tom Reynolds, Geraldine Hallinan and Darren Williams

CARTON CUP

Our Carton cup team under the management of Breda V and Anne met Castlecomer on Fri for the return leg of the tournament.

Our ladies played great golf, going to the wire with most matches, resulting in a playoff to secure a win. We were now on equal footing and a second playoff had to commence with the designated players to secure the overall result.

Aine was our lady who had won her own match on the 8th and now in the playoff again for the 3rd time played super golf up the first landing the ball beautifully on the green. Both were in the same position on the green and our opponent sank a long downhill putt to claim the win.

Congratulations and well done to our girls who have played great golf in keeping us in the tournament for so long and gave us many hours of nail-biting entertainment!  We would like to thank everyone involved from players, caddies, managers and especially our own members whose support was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Onwards and upwards for next year.

A word of thanks to the ladies from Castlecomer who gave us a very friendly game and were wonderful company. We wish them the very best of luck in their next leg, and hope they go all the way to Carton House.

JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL

Our memorial classic was a tremendous success with a packed course teeing off at 9am to play 32 holes of golf in different formats. There were food stations in the car park and a BBQ off the 12th fairway keeping us sustained on our way around the course.

Thanks to Bob and his team, the entire day went without a hitch and the weather played a huge part making it enjoyable for everyone!

After an enjoyable dinner, the presentation of prizes took place with some phenomenal scores from the men, well done to all in the winner’s enclosure. The proceeds of the day will go to the Palliative Care Ward in Dungarvan District Hospital and Paula French spoke about how the money will be used and how grateful they are to receive the funds.

Many thanks to all who helped in making the day a success, Bob and his team of Merry Men for organising the golf, to the ladies who catered in the car park, they were kept on their toes making fresh sandwiches, teas/coffees with some beautiful home baked desserts and cakes. To Sinead and Marie on the BBQ who produced delicious burgers and sausages which went down a treat, thank you everyone for all your hard work on the day, it was much appreciated.

A big Thank You to the members who sponsored all the food for the day, to the McGrath family for the beautiful meal it was extremely generous and appreciated.

CARTON CUP

Our Carton cup team under the management of Breda V and Anne will meet Castlecomer on Fri 19th July for the second leg of the tournament.  The ladies are looking forward to the return leg on home soil and we are looking forward to welcoming them to our Club. Congratulations and well done to our girls so far who have played great golf and keeping us in the tournament! Tee times will be posted on WhatsApp and support on the day would be greatly appreciated.

INTER CLUB SENIOR FOURSOMES

Our girls met Mallow in the Regional semi-final which was played in Cork GC on Sat 13th July. Our team consisted of Irene/Esther, Aisling/Rosie, Fiona/Karen and subs were Katie/Miriam/Mary C

Our girls put up a tremendous battle against a strong opposition.  All matches were in a strong position with wins and losses, claw backs and all squares throughout. The level of golf played was spectacular and went to the wire with the last match!!

We are now on the map for teams that fight hard and are a force to be reckoned with, to date all our losses went to the last putt on the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st holes! I think that sums up the calibre of golfers on all our teams to date!!

Congrats and well done to our wonderful team, caddies and managers Bridge and Alice, not forgetting our on-course commentary from our L.Capt. Elaine who has kept us riveted over the last few months with her fantastic updates!

Congratulations to the Mallow girls who went on to beat home side Cork GC and now progress to the All-Ireland stages.

GOLD COASTERS

Due to our next Open Team Event on Thursday 18th kindly sponsored by Comserv, we will not be meeting until the 25th when normality resumes.

The timesheet is filling up rapidly for the team event, but there are some slots still available in the afternoon/evening. Get your team together and come and join us for a fun day out!!
