PRESIDENTS PRIZE 2026
Our Presidents Prize takes place next weekend hosted by Presidents Alan and Mary. Commencing on Wednesday evening with our fun scramble and on the hoof Barbecue with closing date Tuesday 4th August at midnight for this event. Qualifying rounds take place on both Friday and Saturday with the final on Sunday. Please see Club app for President’s invitation letter for all details. We wish both Presidents every best wish for their weekend.

CONDOLENCES
We extend our sincere sympathy to Dave and Lil O’Connor on the sad passing of their Daughter Teresa Rea after a short illness. May God have mercy on her gentle soul.

GOLD COASTERS
Our ladies took to the fairways again on Wed to play a Greensomes competition in perfect golfing conditions. This is a great format in relaxed conditions and helps greatly when in a matchplay situation!! Presentation of prizes took place after golf and the lucky winners after countback were : Margaret Mulhearne and Anne Keane. Prizes were again sponsored by a generous member for which we are truly grateful!!

LADY CAPTAIN’S OUTING
Our Lady Capt. Bridge is returning to home soil and hopefully bringing all the Gold Coast ladies with her for what will definitely be a wonderful day out!!

This year the competition in aid of Dungarvan Community Hospital will be a Classic running from Mon 31st Aug to Sun 6th Sept. The format will be a 3 ball Champagne Scramble with 2 scores to count on all holes, max handicap men 24 and ladies 36. There will be Mens, Ladies, Mixed and Non G I prizes for the lucky winners. Entry is €90 per team for members and €150 per team for visitors. Good luck and Enjoy!!

THE EAGLES HAVE LANDED
The eagles had certainly landed in the Gold Coast when four of our ladies scored over the weekend. First home on Saturday with an eagle on the 17th Par 5 was Mairead Ryan, not to be outdone, Sunday brought a plethora of them when Elaine Nash scored one on the 6th Par 5, then Helena Fitzgerald had one on the 9th Par 4 and Inseun Kim brought up the rear with one again on the 17th Par 5.
This was remarkable scoring over the two days from our girls and the question is, where were Sky Sports?? better than any LPGA Tour!! Congratulations to all of our wonderful ladies and here’s to many more!!

It was great to be back to normality after the excitement of the Lady Captain’s Prize and congrats to many of our members who featured over the weekend.
The first game of the month was a scramble played in bright sunny conditions with a slight on-shore breeze to keep everyone cool!! Anne was delighted with the great turnout on the day especially when there were some beautiful prizes to be won kindly sponsored by a member.

CAPTAINS PRIZE 2026

Our Captains’ Prize took place last weekend, and what a fantastic weekend it proved to be. Blessed with beautiful warm weather, the celebrations got underway on Wednesday evening with the Captains’ Scramble and our regular barbecue at the first tee.

A sincere thank you to our wonderful chefs, Aisling Fennell and Martina Corkery, for all their hard work, to Michael Wall for supplying the food, and to everyone who helped in any way to make the evening such a success. The winners are listed below.

The serious competition began on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the qualifying rounds. Nicholas Power posted an excellent score of 66 on Friday to take the clubhouse lead, which he held throughout the weekend.

From early Sunday morning, the clubhouse and car park were buzzing with excitement as competitors prepared for the 11.00am shotgun start. With everyone making their way to their assigned tee boxes, the question was whether the leader could hold his nerve or if someone from the chasing pack would emerge. After an exciting final round, a new leader came to the fore, and we congratulate Tony Fitzgerald our 2026 Captains’ Prize Champion. A full list of prize winners is included below.

The prize presentation took place following a beautiful meal in the Gold Coast Hotel. Club President Alan Darcy opened the evening and was joined by Lady President Mary Sweeney who spoke very highly of Lady Captain Bridge Walsh before Bridge gave a very flowing speech. The ladies’ prize presentation then took place. Congratulations to Deirdre Ruane, who successfully defended her lead over the weekend to emerge as the Ladies’ Captains’ Prize winner.

President Alan Darcy then in a well prepared speech introduced our popular Captain Johnny Hughes, and spoke of him in very high regard paying tribute to his dedication and commitment to the club. In his speech, Johnny’s first words of thanks were reserved for Bob O’Brien for his guidance and advice over the years. He also thanked his wife and family, the greenkeeping staff, the hotel staff, Irene Lynch, Mark Weldon and Conor in the kiosk, the McGrath family for providing such a wonderful course to call our home club led by Mark Lenihan, his fellow committee members, particularly Michael Wall and Martin Morris who do trojan work throughout the year. Johnny then presented the prizes for the men’s competition.

We thank Captains Johnny Hughes and Bridge Walsh for hosting a wonderful weekend and wish them every success for the remainder of their captaincy.

Our next major event will be the President’s Prize Weekend, beginning with the President’s Scramble on Wednesday, 5th August. Qualifying rounds will take place on Friday and Saturday, with the final on Sunday, 9th August.

 

JUNIOR CUP

Hard luck to our Junior Cup team, who were defeated in Muskerry last Saturday. Congratulations to the entire panel, reserves and caddies for their commitment and performances throughout the competition. You represented both yourselves and the club with great pride.

A special word of thanks goes to team managers David “Doc” O’Connor and Michael Wall for all their hard work and dedication.

 

VINCENT NEVIN COMPETITION

The next round of the Vincent Nevin Competition takes place at home against Tramore on Saturday, 11th July, with the match teeing off at 3.00pm.

CAPTAINS PRIZE WEEKEND

Our Lady Capt. Bridge and Capt. Johnny kick started their very special occasion with the scramble and BBQ on Wednesday evening in perfect golfing weather. There was a great turnout for the golf with a party atmosphere, music and fabulous food cooked by our resident chefs, Aisling and Martina.

The scramble of mixed teams was great fun, very sociable and enjoyed by all. There were some great scores returned, with some spectacular ones which is the norm every year. A full list of winners will be posted in men’s notes.

Our Lady Capt. was delighted with the turnout, the food and the music provided, thanks to the organisers and our chefs for yet another great event! Thanks to the members for making it such an enjoyable night!!

Friday brought glorious sunshine for the first of the qualifiers with Deirdre the leader in the clubhouse with 69nett and Margaret leading in the Plate. We also heard that Nick was leading in the men’s section with a 66nett, the birthday must have worked wonders!!

Saturday brought another fabulous day for the qualifiers and the Plate with Inseun, Karen and Catherine R bringing in 71nett each. Ann brought in another great score for the Plate, so everything was up for grabs going into Sunday’s shotgun start at 11am.

Bridge really worked her magic in providing a sun filled weekend for her special competition, the weather truly reflected our wonderful Lady Captain who is a whirlwind of joy and love!! Her prizes which were commissioned and designed by Maria Conroy were absolutely stunning. They were a selection of Resin Art scenes from around the Gold Coast which made a really wonderful display.

 

DEIRDRE WINS CAPTAIN’S PRIZE

The Presentation of prizes took place after the meal and the welcome address was made by President Alan who thanked all involved in making the weekend such a success. Lady President Mary spoke about our lady Captain Bridge and her commitment to the job and the club. Bridge spoke warmly about her role in the club and how fortunate she was to be our Captain, she thanked her wonderful committee and all the members who came out in large numbers to help where possible. Special mention to the ladies who provided home bakes and treats, to the ladies involved in doing the results and to Isobel and Bernie for the fabulous flowers which graced every available spot!!!

Presentation of prizes took place to resounding applause for all the winners especially Deirdre who took the honours with two fantastic scores of 69 on day one and 67 on second day. She has now completed the triple lock as she has won in Dungarvan GC and West Waterford GC to add to her accolades!! Her acceptance speech was brilliant as she spoke warmly about her playing partners on the day and how she was worn out trying to keep up with them to a thunderous applause!!

Captain Johnny spoke about the club and it’s wonderful location near the sea and how fortunate we were to have such a friendly club with members willing to help out for any occasion. He thanked the course staff, hotel staff and especially Irene and Mark in the kiosk for their hard work in keeping the show on the road. Congratulations and well done to Tony Fitzgerald who secured the Captain’s Trophy.

Beautiful music was provided by Johnny’s talented family which was a real treat to the musical ear!! It was a wonderful weekend of great golf, plenty of sunshine, gorgeous food, beautiful music and two very happy and tired Captains!!

 

BIRTHDAY WISHES

There was another celebration on Wednesday night when my fellow PRO Nick celebrated a very notable birthday. There was great excitement and birthday cake presented on behalf of the members to a very shocked Birthday Boy!! Congratulations and Best Wishes on your very special occasion and here’s to many more!!

It’s a great format where you are relying on your partner’s skills to keep the ball in play and keep your own concentration on every shot!! CAPTAINS PRIZE 2026
Our very Popular Captain Johnny Hughes presents his week starting on this Wednesday 1st July with the Scramble, a fun get together for all members with a on the hoof Barbecue, spot prizes and lots more, closing date for Scramble is 12 midnight on Tuesday. The serious part of the weekend gets under way on Thursday Friday and Saturday which are Qualifying days for the Grand final on Sunday 5th July where 52 Golfers will take to the Fairways to see who is crowned Captains Winner for 2026. MICHAEL CASHMAN TROPHY
Hard luck to the Michael Cashman Team who played away to Waterford Castle last Thursday and were narrowly beaten 3-2 on the 3rd extra hole.

SENIOR CUP
Our Senior Cup team were beaten yesterday by Carrick on Suir Golf club at home in Carrick. Our team can be so happy with their display of golf and they did themselves and the Club proud. The team was as follows Phil Coffey, John Hallinan, Diarmuid Henley, Andrew Kirwan and Kevin Walsh, subs John White and Colin Mc Arthur. We thank our 3 caddies and supporters who made the trip and thanks also to Managers Alan Darcy and Dave Doc O’ Connor.

The Gold Coasters were on tour again last week as a group of us headed to our neighbours, Dungarvan GC to play in an Open 4Ball team event in beautiful sunny conditions.
We were warmly welcomed by the Lady Captain Carmel and members of the club who thanked us for coming to support them and a great day was had by all.

CAPTAINS PRIZE 2026
Booking is now open for both the Captain’s Prize and the Captains Scramble.
The Mixed Scramble takes place on Wednesday 1st July with a shotgun start at 6pm, followed by a BBQ. Teams will be drawn on Wednesday morning.
The Captain’s Prize for the Men runs from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th July, with qualifying over Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The top 52 qualifiers will progress to the final on Sunday which will be a shotgun start at 11am.
Entries for both events must be on the timesheet by midnight on Tuesday 30th June, after which the draw for playing partners will take place.
We wish Captain Johnny Hughes and Lady Captain Bridge Walsh the very best for their Captain’s Prize and look forward to seeing as many members as possible take part in what promises to be a fantastic week of golf and social events.

SENIOR CUP
Our Senior Cup team travelled to Mallow on Sunday 21st to take on Cork GC in fabulous sunny conditions. Our ladies played brilliant golf to bring two of the matches to the 19th, but unfortunately had to succumb to the Cork ladies.
We are very proud of our ladies and the standard of golf played, we wish the Cork team every success in their next leg of the tournament. Thanks to the managers John White and Fiona Howard and to the many members who travelled to support the team on the day!!

GOLD COASTERS
The weather was fabulous for our trip to Dunhill to do the Anne Valley Walk last Wednesday with delicious tea/coffee and scones on arrival. The walk was stunning with lovely views of the river and lake with a family of swans and signets giving us some fabulous shots as they sailed seamlessly along!!
After our walk, we travelled to Bonmahon to have lunch in the Engine House which was absolutely delicious and enjoyed by everyone. Thanks a mill to Anne who organised yet another marvellous day out!!

INTERCLUB COMPETITIONS
Three of our interclub teams were in action during the week.
Hard luck to our Barton Shield team management and players who were defeated away to Tramore last Thursday.
Congratulations to our Jimmy Bruen team management and players who beat neighbours Dungarvan at Goldcoast on Saturday evening.
Commiserations to our Pierce Purcell team management and players who were narrowly defeated by West Waterford at home on Sunday.
They were all sporting games and a sincere thank you to all players, managers, caddies and supporters for their commitment, time and effort in representing Goldcoast Golf Club. We wish the winning teams every success in the next round.

CLUB SYMPATHIES

GENTS GOLFER OF THE YEAR 2026
The Golfer of the Year (GOY) competition returns for the 2026 season and will be based on performance across a series of qualifying competitions throughout the year.
Overview The GOY recognises the most consistent performer across 10 qualifying competitions, with each player’s best 7 results counting towards their final total. Qualifying Competitions 19 April — Singles Matchplay Qualifier (Stableford, White) 3 May — May Medal (Stroke, Blue) 24 May — Vice Captain’s Prize (Stroke, White) 21 June — Vice President’s Prize (Stableford, White) 3–4 July — Captain’s Prize Qualifier (Stroke, Blue) 26 July — July Medal (Stroke, Blue) 7–8 August — President’s Prize Qualifier (Stableford, Blue) 23 August — August Medal (Stroke, Blue) 13 September — September Medal (Stroke, Blue) 4 October — 18 Hole Stableford (White) Scoring All competition results are converted to Stableford points Best 7 of 10 scores qualify

ON THE COURSE
Please remember the Three R’s: Rake Bunkers – Always rake the bunker after use, leaving it as you would hope to find it. Replace Divots – Replace and firmly press down any divots taken. Repair Pitch Marks – Repair your own pitch marks (and any others you see) on the greens to help keep surfaces smooth and true. Your cooperation helps maintain the course in excellent condition for everyone, thank you.

INTERCLUB NEWS
Our Junior Cup team under the guidance of Dave Doc O’Connor had a famous win over Youghal last Saturday at home in the Gold Coast and now progress to Muskerry Golf Club in Cork on the first week of July to compete in the Regional semi-finals. The team was as follows Kevin Walsh, Phil Coffey, Andrew Kirwan Brian McGill and Alan Darcy. Best of luck to all in the next round.
The Vincent Nevin competition was also played on Saturday away to Faithlegg and after a tough battle with one match going to the 21st hole the Gold Coast Golf Club took the spoils under the watchful eye of Team Captain Nicholas Power assisted by Alan Darcy. We now go on to play the winners of Tramore and Waterford Castle in the next round. Fixture and time to be announced shortly. The team on the day was as follows Colin McArthur and Sean Fitzpatrick, Lar Whelan and Noel McCann, Brian Fahey and Micheal Wall, Tony Moore and Darren Power, Roy Ware and Phil Kinsella. Reserves Micheal Kavanagh and Anslem Hayes and of course our ball spotter Captain Johnny Hughes.
Our Bruen Team take on Dungarvan at home in the Gold Coast next Saturday 13th June in afternoon all support kindly appreciated.
Our Purcell Team take on West Waterford at home in the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon, come out and support the team.

INTER CLUB SENIOR FOURSOMES
Our Senior Foursomes team travelled to Muskerry on Sunday for a marathon match play event. Our girls took on Monkstown in the morning match, teeing off at 9.30am and after a riveting match and superb golf they secured a very safe win for the Gold Coast.
After lunch and a short break, our ladies again took to the fairways at 2.30pm in gale force winds and heavy sporadic showers to take on their next opponents, Douglas who had a bye for the morning match.
In spite of the inclement weather and starting a second 18 holes our ladies played spectacular golf, with the first match won on the 16th and the last going to last putt on the 18th. Congratulations and well done to our wonderful team and managers for a brilliant display of precision golf against two Cork clubs on home territory, we are very proud of you!!

The on-course commentary was provided by Elaine and helpers which was so engaging that you felt like you were there in person, Sky Sports could do with your whirlwind second by second reporting!! GOLD COASTERS
The weather was not playing ball with us for the last few Thursdays so it was decided to ditch the golf and go for lunch and catch-up which we did last week. The Moorings was booked for 1pm and a small group met for delicious food, chat and plenty of laughter. As the weather is still so unpredictable we have decided to do the Anne Valley Walk next Thursday, time and details will be posted on WhatsApp, all are welcome.
