This year’s John McGrath Memorial Golf Classic in aid of Dungarvan Community Hospital is up and running. It takes place from Monday 31st August to Sunday 6th September.
There’s still time to get your team together, the competition is a 3-Ball Champagne Scramble with two scores to count on all holes. The maximum handicap is 24 for men and 36 for ladies.
Prizes will be presented in the Men’s, Ladies’, Mixed and Non-Golf Ireland categories.
Entry is €90 per team for members and €150 per team for visitors. A raffle will take place to co-inside with the event with some wonderful prizes to be won, 1 strip for €2, 3 strips for €5, tickets available from the kiosk

Our third scramble of the month over 9 holes was another great success with a good turnout in fabulous sunny conditions. As usual, Anne had sourced some very practical prizes for the lucky recipients. The winners on the day were: Mairead Curran, Ellen Foley and Mary Sweeney 42. Raffle : Peig Foley and Breda Conway

LADY CAPTAIN’S OUTING
Our Lady Capt. Bridge returned to home soil bringing a large group of the Gold Coast ladies with her for what was definitely a wonderful day out!!
The venue was Cahir Park GC last Saturday with tea/coffee scones on arrival which were enjoyed by everyone. Despite the inclement weather in the morning, we were delighted to find the sun shining on arrival in Cahir Park with perfect golfing conditions for our fun scramble!!
Presentation of prizes after our delicious dinner was hosted by Bridge amid much banter and cheers for the lucky teams which was everyone in the audience in order of scores submitted. The winner of the longest drive was Mary Kiely who was first out and remained untouchable!
The winner of nearest the pin was Ger Hallinan after many measurements and much scrutiny, well done girls and to all the prize winners on the day.
A word of thanks to Elaine for all her work in the team formations and collating all the scores and results, to Martina who was our photographer for the day and did a marvellous job!! A special word of appreciation to our wonderful Lady Captain Bridge for including everybody and making it day to remember!!!

A music table quiz will be held on Friday 25th Sept at 8pm in the Gold Coast Hotel in aid of Breast Cancer Research Ireland which will be a prelude to our Play In Pink Day on Sunday. Our quizmaster for the evening will be the ever

PAST AND PRESENT CAPTAINS AND PRESIDENTS
Many of our ladies took to the fairways of Dungarvan GC on Sunday to play in the annual open event sponsored by Betty O’Brien which is now in its 31st year! A full timesheet was in operation for this very popular competition which was run very efficiently by the ladies’ club.
We were warmly welcomed by Lady Captain Carmel and Lady Vice Captain Cathy who were fine tuning the event. The weather was perfect and the course in magnificent condition which made the game very enjoyable. Presentation of prizes took place in the clubhouse amid loud chatter, laughter and great food, thanks to all involved in making it another memorable day in Dungarvan!!!

PRESIDENTS PRIZE 2026
We congratulate both our Presidents namely Alan Darcy and Mary Sweeney on a wonderful weekend, from there scramble to the final day, everything went off a treat, they even organised the beautiful weather. Well done to all that took part over the weekend and well done to Lar Whelan, winner of the men’s section and Martina Corkery winner of the ladies for 2026. We would like to thank Aisling Fennell and Martina Corkery for looking after our food on Wednesday evening, Micheal Wall for suppling the sausages and burgers as always, to Rob and his team for the condition of the course in very testing weather. To Mark and Maura and all the hotel staff for the lovely meal. To Irene Conor and Mark Weldon for all their help. To Martin, Johnny, Frank, Micheal, Mark, and Brian for looking after cards and the results. PRESIDENTS’ PRIZE 2026
Our Presidents’ Prize took place last weekend, and what a fantastic week it was for Presidents Alan Darcy and Mary Sweeney.
Blessed with beautiful weather the celebrations got underway on Wednesday evening with the Presidents’ Scramble and barbecue at the first tee. The serious competition began on Friday and Saturday with the qualifying rounds, and by early Sunday morning car park was buzzing with excitement as competitors prepared for the 11.00am shotgun start final.
After an exciting final round a new champion emerged and we congratulate Lar Whelan our 2026 Presidents’ Prize Champion and Martina Corkery who claimed Mary Sweeney’s Lady President’s Prize.
Well done to all who took part and a huge thank you to everyone involved in making the event such a great success. A full report will feature in next week’s notes.

PRESIDENT’S PRIZE WEEKEND
Our Presidents Alan and Mary held their special event from the 5th to the 9th August, starting with our fun scramble on Wednesday night which was a resounding success. There were some fabulous scores returned over the 11 Hole scramble with Kevin Walsh’s team coming in 9 under to take the accolade as the winners of the competition.
The BBQ manned by our chefs Aisling and Martina serving cooked to order burgers and sausages was a bigger success as many went back to sample seconds of what was on offer, absolutely beautiful. Well done ladies, you hit the spot with the food and beverages!!!
The weather played ball for the qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday with plenty of sunshine bringing in a mix of scores on both days. Our President Mary kept us all sated with lovely savoury bites and a goodie bag for the journey!! Thanks a mill to the ladies who supplied the beautiful tray bakes and chocolate temptations on both days, stunning!!
The final on Sunday brought another stunning day of sunshine for our Presidents as the finalists took to the fairways with a shotgun start at 11am. The leaders maintained their position coming in the top four positions with Martina claiming the honours as winner of the 2026 President’s Prize. Congratulations Martina and all the prizewinners on two great days of golf, also heartiest congratulations to Lar Whelan who claimed Alan’s Trophy.
The presentation of prizes took place to a packed function room with Captain Johnny welcoming everyone and introducing Lady Captain Bridge who spoke warmly about Mary and her input into the club. Mary then spoke of her role within the club and thanked everyone who helped over the weekend, everyone who baked and the ladies who produced some fabulous floral arrangements. To the ladies who were tasked with the job of collating cards and doing results, thank you very much!!
The weekend was a marvelous success with fabulous weather, great food and wonderful entertainment with Robbie Weldon and two very popular winners. Well done everybody!!!

This year the competition in aid of Dungarvan Community Hospital will be a Classic running from Mon 31st Aug to Sun 6th Sept. The format will be a 3 ball Champagne Scramble with 2 scores to count on all holes, max handicap men 24 and ladies 36. There will be Mens, Ladies, Mixed and Non G I prizes for the lucky winners.

Our Presidents Prize takes place next weekend hosted by Presidents Alan and Mary. THE EAGLES HAVE LANDED
The eagles had certainly landed in the Gold Coast when four of our ladies scored over the weekend. First home on Saturday with an eagle on the 17th Par 5 was Mairead Ryan, not to be outdone, Sunday brought a plethora of them when Elaine Nash scored one on the 6th Par 5, then Helena Fitzgerald had one on the 9th Par 4 and Inseun Kim brought up the rear with one again on the 17th Par 5.
This was remarkable scoring over the two days from our girls and the question is, where were Sky Sports?? better than any LPGA Tour!! Congratulations to all of our wonderful ladies and here’s to many more!!

Another very hot and sunny day for our ladies as they took to the fairways to play a Greensome competition. Scoring was very tight on the day with the winners coming to the fore with a 1 shot lead.

GOLD COASTERS
It was great to be back to normality after the excitement of the Lady Captain’s Prize and congrats to many of our members who featured over the weekend.
The first game of the month was a scramble played in bright sunny conditions with a slight on-shore breeze to keep everyone cool!! Anne was delighted with the great turnout on the day especially when there were some beautiful prizes to be won kindly sponsored by a member.

CAPTAINS PRIZE 2026

Our Captains’ Prize took place last weekend, and what a fantastic weekend it proved to be. Blessed with beautiful warm weather, the celebrations got underway on Wednesday evening with the Captains’ Scramble and our regular barbecue at the first tee.

A sincere thank you to our wonderful chefs, Aisling Fennell and Martina Corkery, for all their hard work, to Michael Wall for supplying the food, and to everyone who helped in any way to make the evening such a success. The winners are listed below.

The serious competition began on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the qualifying rounds. Nicholas Power posted an excellent score of 66 on Friday to take the clubhouse lead, which he held throughout the weekend.

From early Sunday morning, the clubhouse and car park were buzzing with excitement as competitors prepared for the 11.00am shotgun start. With everyone making their way to their assigned tee boxes, the question was whether the leader could hold his nerve or if someone from the chasing pack would emerge. After an exciting final round, a new leader came to the fore, and we congratulate Tony Fitzgerald our 2026 Captains’ Prize Champion. A full list of prize winners is included below.

The prize presentation took place following a beautiful meal in the Gold Coast Hotel. Club President Alan Darcy opened the evening and was joined by Lady President Mary Sweeney who spoke very highly of Lady Captain Bridge Walsh before Bridge gave a very flowing speech. The ladies’ prize presentation then took place. Congratulations to Deirdre Ruane, who successfully defended her lead over the weekend to emerge as the Ladies’ Captains’ Prize winner.

President Alan Darcy then in a well prepared speech introduced our popular Captain Johnny Hughes, and spoke of him in very high regard paying tribute to his dedication and commitment to the club. In his speech, Johnny’s first words of thanks were reserved for Bob O’Brien for his guidance and advice over the years. He also thanked his wife and family, the greenkeeping staff, the hotel staff, Irene Lynch, Mark Weldon and Conor in the kiosk, the McGrath family for providing such a wonderful course to call our home club led by Mark Lenihan, his fellow committee members, particularly Michael Wall and Martin Morris who do trojan work throughout the year. Johnny then presented the prizes for the men’s competition.

We thank Captains Johnny Hughes and Bridge Walsh for hosting a wonderful weekend and wish them every success for the remainder of their captaincy.

Our next major event will be the President’s Prize Weekend, beginning with the President’s Scramble on Wednesday, 5th August. Qualifying rounds will take place on Friday and Saturday, with the final on Sunday, 9th August.

 

JUNIOR CUP

Hard luck to our Junior Cup team, who were defeated in Muskerry last Saturday. Congratulations to the entire panel, reserves and caddies for their commitment and performances throughout the competition. You represented both yourselves and the club with great pride.

A special word of thanks goes to team managers David “Doc” O’Connor and Michael Wall for all their hard work and dedication.

 

VINCENT NEVIN COMPETITION

The next round of the Vincent Nevin Competition takes place at home against Tramore on Saturday, 11th July, with the match teeing off at 3.00pm.

CAPTAINS PRIZE WEEKEND

Our Lady Capt. Bridge and Capt. Johnny kick started their very special occasion with the scramble and BBQ on Wednesday evening in perfect golfing weather. There was a great turnout for the golf with a party atmosphere, music and fabulous food cooked by our resident chefs, Aisling and Martina.

The scramble of mixed teams was great fun, very sociable and enjoyed by all. There were some great scores returned, with some spectacular ones which is the norm every year. A full list of winners will be posted in men’s notes.

Our Lady Capt. was delighted with the turnout, the food and the music provided, thanks to the organisers and our chefs for yet another great event! Thanks to the members for making it such an enjoyable night!!

Friday brought glorious sunshine for the first of the qualifiers with Deirdre the leader in the clubhouse with 69nett and Margaret leading in the Plate. We also heard that Nick was leading in the men’s section with a 66nett, the birthday must have worked wonders!!

Saturday brought another fabulous day for the qualifiers and the Plate with Inseun, Karen and Catherine R bringing in 71nett each. Ann brought in another great score for the Plate, so everything was up for grabs going into Sunday’s shotgun start at 11am.

Bridge really worked her magic in providing a sun filled weekend for her special competition, the weather truly reflected our wonderful Lady Captain who is a whirlwind of joy and love!! Her prizes which were commissioned and designed by Maria Conroy were absolutely stunning. They were a selection of Resin Art scenes from around the Gold Coast which made a really wonderful display.

 

DEIRDRE WINS CAPTAIN’S PRIZE

The Presentation of prizes took place after the meal and the welcome address was made by President Alan who thanked all involved in making the weekend such a success. Lady President Mary spoke about our lady Captain Bridge and her commitment to the job and the club. Bridge spoke warmly about her role in the club and how fortunate she was to be our Captain, she thanked her wonderful committee and all the members who came out in large numbers to help where possible. Special mention to the ladies who provided home bakes and treats, to the ladies involved in doing the results and to Isobel and Bernie for the fabulous flowers which graced every available spot!!!

Presentation of prizes took place to resounding applause for all the winners especially Deirdre who took the honours with two fantastic scores of 69 on day one and 67 on second day. She has now completed the triple lock as she has won in Dungarvan GC and West Waterford GC to add to her accolades!! Her acceptance speech was brilliant as she spoke warmly about her playing partners on the day and how she was worn out trying to keep up with them to a thunderous applause!!

Captain Johnny spoke about the club and it’s wonderful location near the sea and how fortunate we were to have such a friendly club with members willing to help out for any occasion. He thanked the course staff, hotel staff and especially Irene and Mark in the kiosk for their hard work in keeping the show on the road. Congratulations and well done to Tony Fitzgerald who secured the Captain’s Trophy.

Beautiful music was provided by Johnny’s talented family which was a real treat to the musical ear!! It was a wonderful weekend of great golf, plenty of sunshine, gorgeous food, beautiful music and two very happy and tired Captains!!

 

BIRTHDAY WISHES

There was another celebration on Wednesday night when my fellow PRO Nick celebrated a very notable birthday. There was great excitement and birthday cake presented on behalf of the members to a very shocked Birthday Boy!! Congratulations and Best Wishes on your very special occasion and here’s to many more!!
