GOLDCOAST GOLF CLUB NOTES 2nd AUGUST 2020

Great to see so many people on the course playing golf.  Conditions were mixed in the week but still a good many people got in a round.  Thanks to Captains John and Anne for remembering the front-line workers on Sunday.  It was a nice touch by the Captains for the year that is in it and we hope your bucket in the kiosk was bursting come Sunday evening.  If you get out to play golf in the coming week enjoy the experience.  The course is in truly magnificent condition.  With the damp and warm conditions the grass is growing great and the whole course looks fresh and green.

RULE FOR THE WEEK:  Seeking Advice

While it is one of the most sociable of sports, golf is a solitary game and this is reflected within the Rules.  You cannot ask advice on club selection, for example, from anyone other than your caddie.    Neither should you offer advice to opponents in competition. However, you may ask for information on the Rules, distances or positions of hazards or the flagstick.

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 26th July 2020

GOLD COAST GOLF CLUB NOTES 26th JULY 2020

At a special committee meeting convened on Tuesday evening addressed by our Captain John White it was decided not to have a Captain’s Prize or President’s Prize this year considering the Covid 19 situation.  The statement released by the Captain’s is as follows:-  “Following much deliberation Lady Captain Anne, President Brian, and Men’s Captain John have taken the difficult decision to postpone our respective weekends until 2021.  We made the decision against the backdrop of the Covid 19 pandemic and the new normal we find ourselves in.  The health and well-being of our members and guests are at the heart of our decision.  It will not be possible to have a social gathering on our weekends which we believe is an integral part of the events.  We hope people understand the decision and the reasons for doing so.  We hope to see you all in 2021 in what we hope will be better days ahead.”   Anne, Brian, John.

RESPECT FOR FRONTLINE WORKERS

Captain John is sponsoring a special competition on Sunday 2nd August in dedication to the wonderful work done by all our front-line workers during the Covid 19 Pandemic.  The competition will be played off the white tees, stableford and will count towards Golfer Of The Year.   Members are asked to wear their Club Colours on the day if possible.   (See also Ladies Notes).

The Player of the Year and Order of Merit awards will take place this year and the list below includes the list of competitions for these events:-

RULE OF THE WEEK:-            NO WAY BACK FROM OUT OF BOUNGS (OB)

Knowing what to do when your ball sails out of bounds is crucial to a beginner. A ball hit beyond the confines of the course (usually marked by white stakes) must be re-played from the original position adding a penalty of one stroke.

The scorecard of any course should have its boundaries clearly marked or described. If you believe a shot has gone OB or into a water hazard always play a provisional and declare it.

You have three minutes to search for it and if indeed it is lost you saved valuable time continuing with the provisional ball despite a one stroke penalty. If your original is subsequently found in bounds or dry within three minutes of the point of search you must continue with the original ball.

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

We are delighted to welcome so many new members to the club just now. Committee and Club Members will be making themselves available to accompany new members on the course, helping with getting handicaps organised, going through the basic rules and the requirements on the course. Members at the Gold Coast will do everything they can to make you welcome so feel free to put your name down anytime with anyone and enjoy the camaraderie, the game, and the stunning scenery.

RULE FOR THE WEEK  – UNPLAYABLE LIES

If your ball has come to rest in a position that you believe to be unplayable, you have three options.

Either hit another ball from the point of your previous shot, drop a ball behind the unplayable lie (as far back as you wish keeping the original lie between you and the hole) or drop the ball within two club lengths either side of the unplayable lie.             Each option incurs a one stroke penalty. (Rule 28)

Rule for the Week:-              Play your ball as it lies

Always play your ball as it lies, wherever it comes to rest, unless the Rules allow you to do otherwise.   Most common exemptions include the effect of ‘loose impediments’ – you can remove leaves, loose twigs, litter – or ‘obstructions’, such as man-made paths, drainage, sprinklers, from which you will receive free relief and be able to drop your ball within one club length at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole. (Rule 13-1)

RULE OF THE WEEK          Green rulings

Once you have reached the green, there are a couple of key Rules of which you need to be aware. Once the ball comes to rest on the putting surface you may mark it with a coin, or disk, lift and clean it but remember to replace in the exact spot. You may repair any pitch-marks – not just yours – other damage such as spike marks attached to the green but not on your line of putt, a playing partner’s putt, or an extension of it, before the completion of the hole. You can have the flagstick either attended at all times but the ball must not strike it. (Rule 17) (Covid 19 has created a situation where the flagstick must remain in place and not be touched, the rest of this ruling remains as stated)

Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 28th June 2020

GOLDCOAST GOLF NOTES 28th JUNE 2020

Hi everyone and welcome.  From today Monday we will be getting back to things being more normal for our golfers.  At the Gold Coast we will have competitions now every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Anybody still needing a handicap just put your name down to play and any member going out will mark your card.  For those new members going out for the first time with their new handicap enjoy the experience.  There will be a committee meeting on Tuesday evening so some fine tuning will be done then relating to planning for the summer and hopefully we will be in a position to keep you informed here in the notes as things progress.

Below is a brief synopsis of what is allowed for Golf Clubs as part of Phase Three easings of Covid 19:

PHASE 3 COMMENCING ON JUNE 29th IN REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

*Four-balls allowed at 10 minute intervals

*Competition golf & visitors permitted

*Restaurants and Bars operating as Restaurants may open under strict guidelines

*Travel restrictions lifted

Golf ‘s Protocol, in Phase 3, has been relaxed considerably to permit clubs to include four-balls on their timesheets at 10-minute intervals. Competitions are now permitted, both closed and open with visitors allowed to pay green fees and compete in open competitions.

As we enter Phase 3 of the phased re-introduction of golf, there remains a major responsibility on golf clubs and golfers to ensure that our sport is conducted in a safe and responsible manner.

Full adherence to the provisions of this Protocol is essential. Golf was in the very privileged position to have been allowed to resume in Phase 1 and this return was based on the sport being able to demonstrate to government that it can take place in a safe, socially distant manner.

The high level of compliance shown thus far is a credit to the sport, but these efforts must be redoubled as we begin competitions and welcome visitors for the first time in several months.

To ensure golf is played safely, golfers must adhere to the Protocols published by the GUI and ILGU.
These guidelines are available for viewing on www.golfnet.ie

GENTS FIXTURES

Tues. 30th June Open Gents & Ladies 18H Singles S/F,

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

We are delighted to welcome so many new members to the club just now. Members at the Gold Coast will do everything they can to make you welcome so feel free to put your name down anytime with anyone and enjoy the camaraderie, the game, and the stunning scenery.

Members old and new are reminded to check out the notice board adjacent to the first tee regarding local rules, dress codes etc.  On Tuesday and Wednesday evening (5pm-7pm) are members evening where members will be able to play with some of the new members to facilitate getting handicaps. Please book your time on the BRS system. We will be doing this for the next few weeks.

RULE FOR THE WEEK  Avoid playing the wrong ball

Sounds blindingly obvious but unless you mark your ball before you start, there is a danger – with so many golf balls similarly stamped – you may mistake yours for another player’s.   Playing the wrong ball in match-play could mean loss of hole in singles and will be a two-stroke penalty in stroke-play. To avoid such a penalty, then get marking your ball more clearly with distinctive personalised symbols.    But if you’re unsure the ball – in the rough, for example – is yours, notify you’re playing partners, mark it carefully with a tee peg, lift but do not clean it (only to identify it) and replace in the identical spot you’re within your rights. (Rule 15-1)

RECIPROCAL GREENFEE ARRANGEMENT WITH DUNGARVAN AND WEST WATERFORD GOLF CLUBS

Just a note to remind members that for many years now, all three golf clubs in Dungarvan have operated a reciprocal arrangement where Monday to Friday, members of Gold coast Golf Club can play Dungarvan or West Waterford (or vice versa) for a reduced green fee of €15 now. Another great week for golf at the Gold Coast Golf Club.   Lots of players getting back into the “swing” of things.  Fair play to the new members and existing members for getting together on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for getting handicaps organised.  We hope new members are enjoying the game and experience at the Gold Coast GC.  A special mention for those involved in the maintenance and restoration of the bunkers, they are nearly finished and well done to everyone for helping out.  We are all, existing and new, members looking forward to the next phase of Covid 19 restrictions being lifted and hopefully competitions being restored.    If you get to play this week ENJOY.

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

We are delighted to welcome so many new members to the club just now. Please book your time on the BRS system. We will be doing this for the next few weeks.

RULE OF THE WEEK:-  Play within the parameters of the tee

The first tee shot of a round is always daunting, even for seasoned golfers, so make sure you tee up between and behind the front of the appropriate markers – usually white for medal tees, yellow for men, red for ladies – and within two club lengths. With all the swing thoughts that go through the average player’s head, it can be easy to forget about these basic parameters. Penalty for teeing up the ball outside of them (you may take your stance outside if you prefer) is two shots in strokeplay. (Rule 11)
