Notes 1st July

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 30th June

Junior Cup in Tramore:

Our team lined out as follows: Ger Bagge, Diarmuid Henley, Lar Whelan, Seanie Lenihan and John White. It was as close as you could get in a golf match. Gold Coast won two matches, lost one on 17 and lost 2 on 18. Our management team of Micheal White and Jimmy O’Dwyer put in a big effort here and we are grateful to both for taking the on responsibility. Once again there was great reporting on WhatsApp and thanks to all the following who kept members up to date with the scoring: Pat Power, Tom White, Jimmy O’Dwyer, Colin McArthur, Brian Dunbar, Johnny Hughes, Martin Murray, Kieran Cullinan.

Scratch Match-Play:

The draw for this competition takes place on 14th July at 4 p.m. Please enter on the sheet provided in the kiosk.

Course:

At the moment the course is in fantastic condition and having recently purchased a new roller for the greens it is fair to say that it would be hard to see better greens anywhere in the country. If you haven’t played the course lately you are really missing out.

Well done to the Ladies:

Gold Coast had a huge win against Fota in the Irish National Fourball sponsored by Revive Active and they now go on to play Skibereen in the Munster quarter final. Congratulations to Esther, Noirin, Lorraine, Mairead, Karen, Irene, Mary, Elaine, Martina and Bridget and especially to their manager Mary Clancy. Thanks to Ruth and John for reorting from the courses.

John Fitzgerald, Queens NY RIP

One of our overseas members John  Fitzgerald of Queens NY and Knockateemore, died  last week in the States. John enjoyed his golf in the Goldcoast when he came to visit for many summers. Condolences to Eileen.

Notes 24th June

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 24th June

Senior Cup

Thurles was the venue on Saturday for our clash with Youghal in the 1st round of the Senior Cup. The team lined out as follows: Alan Harty, Diarmuid Henley, Micheal White, John White and Michael Lenihan. Updates on all matches were provided on WhatsApp throughout the day and thanks to Pat, Brian and Martin for keeping us up to date all the time. Gold Coast went on to win the match and next up was near neighbours Dungarvan. Team Manager Ian Prendergast had to make two changes as on the team for the afternoon match due to unavailability of players so the team lines out as follows: Michael Lenihan, John White, Ger Bagge, Seanie Lenihan and Micheal White. Dungarvan proved too strong on the day, we wish them the best of luck in the next round, but a fantastic effort from our panel of players. Thanks to Ian for managing the team and all who supported the players in Thurles.

Junior Cup in Tramore:

We travel to Tramore to face Youghal at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday next in the 1st Round Match. Best of luck to all involved and any support would be greatly appreciated.

Changes to Monthly Medal Format.

The next two monthly Medals will have a new format. The competition will now be played as Stableford off the Blue tee, but the medal will still go to the player with the best nett stroke score. This change is made on a trial basis and will be reviewed after two months.

Sympathy

The Club extends condolences to Nicky Keane on the death of his father John on Saturday. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Iron Man

Well done to Rob and Natalie who both participated in prestigious Iron Man endurance event in Youghal on Sunday in very difficult weather conditions.

Captain’s Prize Weekend

Our Captain’s Prize was played over the Bank Holiday weekend in very mixed weather conditions, ranging from hurricane to monsoon in a matter of 24 hours. However, this did not deter the ladies and gents who braved the elements with some magical scores all round, it was indeed a true test of golf and the low handicappers came to the fore in both sectors. We had an exciting finish between Karen Darcy and Mairead Ryan, with Karen playing off 19 taking the honours for the second time with a fabulous score of 144, well done Karen on super golf over the 2 days!!

Congratulations to Brian O’Connor who took the honours in the men’s Captain’s Prize having ended up in a three way tie with John White and Michael Kavanagh with a great score of 145 each!! Congratulations and well done to Ruth and Pat for a great week-end!

Irish National Fourball sponsored by Revive Active

Notes 3rd June

Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 3rd June

 Captain’s Prize:

Kindly Presented by Pat Power

In a windswept Gold Coast one of the closest Captain’s Prize ever took place over the weekend. Going into Sunday morning, following two days of qualifying, there was still about 27 players in with a realistic chance of winning. The wind started to get stronger as the players approached the second nine and this would have a huge bearing on the end result as the main thing now was to eliminate any mistakes. In the end it came down to a count-back with three players finishing on the same score and two more players just a shot back. Full results below.

At the presentation on Sunday night Captain Pat gave one of the most comprehensive reports ever covering all aspects of golf and life in the Gold Coast. We also learned that Pat had no dog. Following the presentation the large crowd present enjoyed the music into the early hours. A very good weekend, well done Pat.

DUNGARVAN GOLF INTERNATIONAL

What a great week we had for the Dungarvan International Tournament.  Four days golf over 3 fabulous courses and all our friends and visitors had a fantastic time in glorious weather.  This very popular event ran from Monday to Thursday over the three local courses with the final fourth day’s golf at the Gold Coast.  At the closing presentation night, the Club Captains from respective Clubs thanked all the competitors for their continued support of the Tournament and hoped they would continue to spread the word and return again.  The competitors who hailed from the US, UK and all over Ireland were loud in their praise for the organisation of the event, the condition of the golf courses and the great welcome received at the Clubs.  Testament to the great fun they had they all vowed to be back again next year in even greater numbers. Results are below and we thank all the participants for their continued support and we’ve no doubt the Dungarvan Golf International tournament will continue to go from strength to strength.

CAPTAINS’ SCRAMBLE RESULTS

There was a great turnout for the Captains Scramble & BBQ on Wednesday night with over 50 participants on a beautiful evening.  Maurice and Josephine cooked up a storm and all the enthusiastic contingent were well fed and watered!  Thanks to all the players for coming and supporting the Captains and kick starting a great weekend.  Great fun was had by all and thanks to everyone involved in running a great evening.

1st Ger Bagge, Joey Veale, Geoff Collins 271/2.

2nd John White, Eilo Fitzgerald, John Queally 277/8.

3rd Michael Kavanagh, Maria Hayes, Nicholas Fitzgerald 281/4.

Captain’s Scramble, BBQ and Presentation

The Captain’s Scramble took place on Wed 29th May, and was a tremendous success and great fun. The evening started off with a delicious BBQ hosted by our top chefs Maurice and Josephine who left nothing to chance with their culinary skills serving up 5 star food cooked to your liking!! Seanie and Michael proved to be very efficient bartenders with a range of beautiful wines on offer, food and refreshments were on-going during the scramble with pit stops being taken by many who were lured to the aroma of cooking food. Presentation of all outstanding prizes took place after the scramble with raffles and pick out prizes to be won. It was a fabulous evening with a very large entry, such is the popularity of the format, our grateful thanks to our many sponsors and organisers who make these occasions go so smoothly!!

Best Wishes

Sending our very Best Wishes for a speedy recovery to our trusted treasurer Anne, thinking of you this weekend and hope to see you back on the fairways very soon!!

Pierce Purcell Shield

On Saturday last we travelled to Waterford Castle to take on Williamstown in the 1st round of the Pierce Purcell Shield. Following a very tight match Gold Coast eventually won on the 19th hole to earn a place in the next round against the host club Waterford Castle. Local knowledge was a major factor in this match and the result went against us in the end. The panel on duty last Saturday was as follows: Bob O’Brien, Noel McCann, John Hughes, Dave Hallahan, John Walsh, Pa Queally, Seamus O’Connell, Richard Walsh, Michael Wall, Michael Whelan, Tom Reynolds and Brian Dunbar. Thanks to our Captain Pat Power who managed the team.

Fred Perry

Having successfully defeated Youghal in the 1st round Gold Coast then welcomed West Waterford for the 2nd round match. Here the result was again decided on the 19th hole with West Waterford triumphant. The team on duty was John White, Seamus O’Connell, Michael Kavanagh, Davy O’Connor, Tommy Long, Bob O’Brien, Brian O’Connor, Andy Travers, Dec Kiely and Lar Whelan. The team was managed by Bob O’Brien and Liam Clancy.

Scratch Match Play

Gold Coast Classic a huge success: Over 100 teams took part in our recent classic and thanks must go to all the members who took part, to the Winter League Captains for pushing the classic. A special thanks to all our sponsors who were extremely generous with prizes, especially Eamonn, John, Pat and Tim. Thanks to all who sponsored tees. Thanks again to everyone who helped out in any way.

Munster Mid Amateur (Over 30’s) Open Championship

On Saturday 25th May Goldcoast Golf Club hosted the prestigious Munster Mid Amateur Open Championship which was a great showcase for the Club.  This was a 36 hole strokeplay event and we welcomed competitors from all over Ireland who battled it out for the coveted title.  The golf was of a very high standard and the honours went to Kevin Purcell (Slievenamon Golf Club) who shot 74 in the 1st round and 68 in the 2nd round giving him 142, followed in joint second place by Alan Thomas (Dungarvan Golf Club) on 143 who shot 71 & 72 and Eddie McCormack (Galway Golf Club) who shot a 67 in round 1, equalling the course record and 76 in the 2nd round

All were loud in their praise for the condition of the course and the speed of the greens

Many thanks to club members Geoff Collins, Ray Moloney and Seanie Lenihan for assisting the GUI during the event.
