Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 2nd June 2024

Our two Captains held their weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday last and what a weekend it turned out to be.  We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather as the Gods shone down on us.  It all began with the Captains Drive-in on Wednesday night.  I’m glad to report that Elaine and David both spilt the fairway on the first hole!  It continued with the Mixed Scramble with some great scores being returned. Over the 13 holes the winners were as follows: 1st Kevin Walsh, Paddy Walsh, Gerardine Hallinan and John Fennell.  2nd Jack Mullaney, Thomas Long, Sean O’Ciarba and John Faherty. 3rd Darren Williams, Micheal Wall, Bridge Walsh and Patrica Doyle. 4th Dermot Walsh, Brian Looby, David McCarthy and Ned O’Connor. 5th Micheal Kavanagh, Barry Doyle  Nicholas Doyle and Kyle De Winter. 6th John White, Darren Power, Tony Ruane and Mary Dunbar.

Friday and Saturday saw our qualifying rounds taking place.  Micheal Kavanagh posted a 68 nett on Friday to be over-night leader followed closely by Tony Keaver.  Things changed a little on Saturday with Alan Landers joining the leading group.

Sunday morning brought another day of brilliant sunshine, the carpark was busy as members arrived for the final round with everyone on their tee boxes for the shotgun start.  Some great scoring again was returned but as the dust settled, we had new champion Tony Keaver the Captains Prize winner for 2024, followed in second place by Micheal Kavanagh.

We retired to the Hotel for food and the prize presentation.  President John Hallinan got proceedings under way.  He welcomed everyone and called on Lady President Anne Keane and Lady Captain Elaine Nash who presented the ladies with their prizes. Congratulations to Lady Captains Winner for 2024 Mairead Ryan.

It was then the turn of the Men’s Club President John who spoke very highly of Captain David O’Connor and his achievements in the club both has a player and committee member.  It was then the Captains turn and he presented a very well written speech, in it thanking Micheal Wall for asking him to be Vice-Captain which he described as a honour to hold the office.  As Captain he went on to thank kiosk staff Director of Golf Irene Lynch and Brian Fahey, Rob and his Green Keeping staff, Mark Lenihan and the Management team, our Hotel staff for the beautiful food and the McGrath Family for our fabulous golf course.   He thanked John White, John Hallinan, Maurice Fennell, Micheal Wall and of course Brendan O’Brien for all their hard work in looking after the scorecards and helping to make the weekend the success it was.  He then presented a bouquet of flowers to lady Captain Elaine.  I want to say well done to Captains David and Elaine for all your hard work and continued success for 2024.

Our Captain David and Lady Captain Elaine held their very special event in glorious sunshine for the qualifying days and the final on Sunday. They both pulled out the stops for the week-end with Doc making sure the greens were in perfect condition and Elaine providing the on-

course refreshments and tasty bites on Sunday which were enjoyed by everyone, thanks a mill Elaine.

The presentation of prizes took place shortly after the game with our President John opening the ceremony and welcoming everybody to the event. The presentation started with the ladies prize winners which was introduced by our Lady President Anne.

Elaine spoke about the wonderful weekend of golf and the sunshine bestowed on them and thanked all who played for her prize. Her table of prizes were beautiful with an eclectic mix of sports, arts and crafts and crystal.

Mairead, who put two fabulous scores together to claim the coveted Trophy received her prize amid a thunderous applause. Her acceptance speech was one of shock and pure delight, a very worthy and popular winner, well done Mairead!

This year our Captain’s Drive-in took place before the Captain’s Scramble and BBQ which was a wonderful occasion for everyone.  Our chefs Maurice and Aisling tossed up some beautiful burgers and sausages with lots of sides and sauces.

Martina took up the role of sommelier for the occasion, serving beers, wines and minerals to the thirsty golfers!!  The presentation of prizes took place after the 13 Hole scramble with some remarkable scores returned as per normal, this is a competition where 5 or 6 under par is required to win any of the coveted prizes!

Congratulations to our Captains for a wonderful weekend of golf, sunshine, music, dancing and pure craic.

We will be back to our normal competition next Thursday, see you all there!

This year we have entered the Silver and Bronze Medal Competition. The h/cap categories for each are as follows: Silver – h/cap index up to and including 20.0, Bronze – h/cap index of 20.1 and higher. The club winner for each will be the player who returns the lowest aggregate of 3 net scores in stroke competitions in both Silver and Bronze categories from the 1st April to 31st July.  Both winners will represent the club in the Regional Final in W/Waterford and subsequently onto Final!!

Ladies, if you had ever thought of taking up golf, now is the time to do it, our Lady Captain Elaine or any committee member would be delighted to take out potential members and showcase our beautiful course which is blessed with unrivalled mountain and coastal scenery.
