CAPTAINS PRIZE 2024
Our two Captains held their weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday last and what a weekend it turned out to be. We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather as the Gods shone down on us. It all began with the Captains Drive-in on Wednesday night. I’m glad to report that Elaine and David both spilt the fairway on the first hole! It continued with the Mixed Scramble with some great scores being returned. Over the 13 holes the winners were as follows: 1st Kevin Walsh, Paddy Walsh, Gerardine Hallinan and John Fennell. 2nd Jack Mullaney, Thomas Long, Sean O’Ciarba and John Faherty. 3rd Darren Williams, Micheal Wall, Bridge Walsh and Patrica Doyle. 4th Dermot Walsh, Brian Looby, David McCarthy and Ned O’Connor. 5th Micheal Kavanagh, Barry Doyle Nicholas Doyle and Kyle De Winter. 6th John White, Darren Power, Tony Ruane and Mary Dunbar.
Friday and Saturday saw our qualifying rounds taking place. Micheal Kavanagh posted a 68 nett on Friday to be over-night leader followed closely by Tony Keaver. Things changed a little on Saturday with Alan Landers joining the leading group.
Sunday morning brought another day of brilliant sunshine, the carpark was busy as members arrived for the final round with everyone on their tee boxes for the shotgun start. Some great scoring again was returned but as the dust settled, we had new champion Tony Keaver the Captains Prize winner for 2024, followed in second place by Micheal Kavanagh.
We retired to the Hotel for food and the prize presentation. President John Hallinan got proceedings under way. He welcomed everyone and called on Lady President Anne Keane and Lady Captain Elaine Nash who presented the ladies with their prizes. Congratulations to Lady Captains Winner for 2024 Mairead Ryan.
It was then the turn of the Men’s Club President John who spoke very highly of Captain David O’Connor and his achievements in the club both has a player and committee member. It was then the Captains turn and he presented a very well written speech, in it thanking Micheal Wall for asking him to be Vice-Captain which he described as a honour to hold the office. As Captain he went on to thank kiosk staff Director of Golf Irene Lynch and Brian Fahey, Rob and his Green Keeping staff, Mark Lenihan and the Management team, our Hotel staff for the beautiful food and the McGrath Family for our fabulous golf course. He thanked John White, John Hallinan, Maurice Fennell, Micheal Wall and of course Brendan O’Brien for all their hard work in looking after the scorecards and helping to make the weekend the success it was. He then presented a bouquet of flowers to lady Captain Elaine. I want to say well done to Captains David and Elaine for all your hard work and continued success for 2024.
