Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 28th August 2022

PRESIDENTS PRIZE 2022

Our Presidents held their weekend last week and what a huge success it turned out to be. Qualifying took place on Friday and Saturday in dry but windy weather.  This didn’t stop some high scoring being achieved, as Friday evening came to a close we had an over night leader Seamus O’Connell on 40 points. We then turned our attention to Saturday and by lunch time we had a new leader in Colin McArthur with 43 points, as the day drew to a close a new leader emerged from the field namely David Magnier with a huge score of 50 points.

Our final took place on Sunday morning with a shotgun start by a member and not the navy vessel that was moored in the bay as some may have thought.  There was great excitement among the players as they made their way to their tee boxes. Again great scoring was produced as our overnight leader kept his cool and returning a great score of 47 points being crowned Presidents Prize Winner for 2022 with 97 points. David Magnier was closely followed in second place by Colin McArthur with 83points and 3rd place Seamus O’Connell with 77 points.

We retired to the Hotel where we were treated to a beautiful meal and our presentation of prizes took place. Captain Seamus got things under way with his opening speech, he then called on Lady Captain Isobel who spoke very highly of our Lady President Gerardine and the glow she has brought to the club since she joined a few years ago. Lady President Gerardine then gave a lovely speech thanking everyone who had helped her along the way, she thanked her family who have been a great support to her she then presented her prize to a very popular winner from the Nire where not alone are they good at football but now have a golfing honour lady President Prize 2022 went to Mairead Ryan. Captain Seamus spoke of President Frank and how he has been so helpful in their year together always willing to help out. President Frank then took to the microphone to thank his family and his guests who had travelled to play.  He thanked the fixtures committee who did so much work over the weekend, the Hotel who as always provided such wonderful service, Irene, Brian and Mark for all their help and the ground staff for having the course in such wonderful condition.  He then presented his prize a beautiful slate replica of Granagh Castle incorporated in a lovely lamp to winner David Magnier. We would like to congratulate both Presidents Frank and Gerardine on a wonderful weekend and wish them well for the remainder of their year.

ON THE COURSE

A few members have contacted me regarding stray balls on the course with no shout been called its most important to shout fore if your ball goes in the wrong direction than which you intended for everyone’s safety.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Golf Ireland’s Championship Committee has reviewed the eligibility criteria for inter-club competitions for 2023 competitions. As a result of this review to be eligible to compete for their club, a member MUST have a fully developed handicap record (i.e., 20 or more scores recorded on their record). There will be no requirement initially for a set number of these scores to have been achieved in the previous calendar year – just for the player to have 20 scores from any date on their record. However, these 20 scores must be on players’ records prior to the end of 2022 for eligibility in 2023.

MARKING OF CARDS

Golf Ireland guidelines have stated that all 3 handicaps must be recorded on cards for competition and casual rounds for handicap purposes. To avoid disqualification you must record your h/cap index, playing h/cap and most importantly the course h/cap, all of these are available on the Golf Ireland app and also on screen when you log in for competitions. It is also important not to enter a zero for stableford competitions as it interferes with standard scratch, if you blank a hole just record the shots as the computer will adjust accordingly. All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in agreement with the player before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

NEW MEMBER DEALS

Ladies, if you had ever thought of taking up golf, now is the time to do it, our Lady Captain Isobel and any committee member would be delighted to take out potential members and showcase our beautiful course and unrivalled scenery!! There are great deals on offer for new members and beginners including tuition, please contact our Director of Golf Irene or Brian in the kiosk on 058 44055 for more information.
