PIERCE PURCELL SHIELD
This competition took place in the Goldcoast yesterday on a bright and breezy day. Our team led by Captains Micheal Kavanagh and Alan Darcy took on our neighbouring club Dungarvan, in a battle to the end. The match went to a playoff with the Goldcoast clinching it on the 20th hole. Each player can be proud of their display yesterday, you did yourselves and the club proud. Next outing is against Tramore Golf Club in a few weeks. A home venue again, so support would be greatly appreciated.
Team: Pat Kiely and Dave O’ Connor, Tony Fitzgerald and Stephen Kiely, Nicky Dee and Darragh Power, Peter O’ Keeffe and James D’Arcy. Reserves Nicky Hayes and Darren Power. Adam O’ Riordan and Micheal Whelan
SENIOR MENS INTER CLUB
The Senior Men’s Inter Club competition took place at the Goldcoast Golf Club last Saturday where our team took on Waterford Castle in very overcast conditions. As the sun broke through in the early evening the team had secured the first win of the competition, a great achievement. Well done to all the team both players and subs and to joint captains namely Bob O’Brien and Liam Clancy. The march continues on to the next round in a few weeks with opponents and venue to be announced nearer the time.

COURSE HANDICAP CHANGES FROM 1st APRIL
The “Course Rating minus Par” change is an update to the World Handicap System (WHS) that took effect in Great Britain and Ireland on April 1st 2024. It’s a new way of calculating handicaps, where the difference between the Course Rating and the Par of the course is taken into account. Here’s how it works: Course Rating is the measure of the difficulty of a course for a scratch golfer. Par is the standard number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to make for a particular course. Under the new system, your Course Handicap is calculated using the following formula:
Course Handicap=Handicap Index × (113÷Slope Rating) + (Course Rating-Par) If the Course Rating is higher than the Par, you’ll receive additional strokes. Conversely, if the Par is higher, you’ll lose strokes. This adjustment aims to make the game fairer and allows players to compete from different tees without needing an adjustment. Updated course handicap tables are displayed at the first tee noticeboard or can be checked by consulting your Golf Ireland App.
