CAPTAINS PRIZE
Our Captains prize took place last weekend hosted by our very popular Captains Michael and Rosie and what weekend it turned out to be. We started off on Wednesday evening with a 13-hole scramble and burgers from the grill prepared by our chefs Aisling and Maurice Fennell. Qualifying rounds took place on Friday and Saturday with the final on Sunday. After the dust settled on Friday evening Nicholas Power was clubhouse leader after returning a 67. His lead at the top was short lived when on Saturday Colin McArthur shot a 61 which set up an interesting final on Sunday with Colin, Nicholas and the great John White teeing off on the 18th as the leading group, with all the rest of the Qualifiers. In the end Colin Mc Arthur was crowned Captains prize winner for 2023 followed closely by Nicholas Power who was second with John White in third. We then headed for the Goldcoast Hotel for a beautiful meal and presentation of prizes.
Lady President Eilo Fitzgerald got things under way, speaking very highly of Lady Captain Rosie Murphy. They then went on to present the prizes to the ladies. Congratulations to Gillian Cashman on winning the Ladies Captains prize.
We then had the presentation of prizes of the men’s club. President Rafael Alvarez gave a lovely speech about Captain Michael and thanked him for all his work in the club down through the years. Michael was joined by his wife and daughter who he thanked for all their support to him over the years, he then went to present his prizes. We congratulate all the winners but a special word to Maurice Swan who shot his age on the course last week we won’t tell you the score! Also to John Queally who was the first winner of the Captains Plate and a huge congratulations to the overall winner Colin McArthur, a fitting prize to one of life’s gentlemen.
A special word of thanks to the following; Irene and Brian in the kiosk, the green keeping staff, course management, Bob O’Brien for all his work in capturing the day on film and his work for the scramble and the draw for the final placings on Sunday assisted by Maurice, Johnny, John, and Frank. Thank you to the ladies committee for all the work they put in over the weekend, to my fellow P.R.O Breda Conway for your kind words which meant a lot. I apologize if I left anyone out, it’s hard to thank everyone but a special word of thanks to Captains Michael and Rosie who pulled off a very successful weekend leaving big shoes to follow next year. Best of luck to you both for the remainder of 2023.
