Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 19th February 2023

This year’s winter league has now entered its 17th and final week. With all the teams making the most of the fine weather it looks like it will be down to the wire in the battle for the top 6 qualifying playoff spots. It will be an exciting finish to the qualifying stages with the League running until this Friday the 24th of February, so best of luck to all team captains and players. The Quarter finals are set for Sunday 5th March with the semi-finals on the following Sunday March 12th. The grand final is penciled in for Sunday 26th March. A huge thank you to our sponsor John White. Prizes of Legs of Lamb will be awarded to all prize winners for winter league until end of February. Each prize winner will carry a 2-point penalty deduction towards further prize qualification until the end of the league. A player winning a second prize will be deducted 4 points etc. A player’s full score will count for the winter league.

Our Captains Michael Wall and Rosemary Murphy will take to the first tee on next Sunday morning February 26th to get our golfing year underway here in the Gold Coast Golf Club for 2023. A shotgun start 18 holes scramble will take place at 10am. A draw will take place for playing partners, please enter your names on the online timesheet by 12 noon Saturday 25th Feb.  Ribs and colcannon and presentation afterwards in the Dugout Bar.  Plenty of after hours practicing is going on by both Captains.  A little bird tells me that Captain Michael is even practicing by night.  All joking aside, I want wish both Captains an enjoyable and successful 2023.

Our dress code for the Goldcoast is slacks and polo shirts. Please note sports jerseys, jeans and track suit bottoms are unacceptable on the golf course. Thank you for your adherence.

Players need to be aware that you can’t for any reason mark your own card while playing your round of golf you must give your card to your playing partner who will mark your card and you will mark his/hers until round is complete. Only then will you get your card back to enter the computer.

To keep our greens in excellent condition we wish to make golfers mindful to please repair all pitch marks. At this time of year, even small pitch shots into the green can damage the surface. Thank you for your continued co-operation. Players are also reminded for the safety of others to continue to shout fore for errant shots. Continuing on with course news we are getting excellent feedback from visitors to our club on the conditions of our fairways and especially our greens which must be some of the best in the country We must thank Rob and and the management team, Irene and Brian in the kiosk for promoting the club and the continuing work on the course which continues to attract golfers from all over the world to our little gem in the sunny South East.

The golf notes that go out every week on the papers and online are for all members of the Club. If you have anything that you want shared on the notes, please contact me on 083 4862771 or Irene or Brian at the kiosk on 058 44055.

We had a marvellous turnout again this week for the Gold Coasters, with many playing extra rounds for their league teams. The midweek golf has proved to be very advantageous in keeping the swing active and playing other competitions in conjunction with the competition of the day!! Many thanks to Anne for continuing to organise the event with presentation of wonderful prizes each week!!

Sunday 26th February is when our Captains Michael and Rosie will officially start the golfing season. This is always a wonderful occasion for our Captains, officers and members and who come to wish them well for their drive-in. An 18 Hole scramble with a shotgun start takes place @ 10.00am, please register online before 12 noon on Saturday 25th Feb. Ribs and colcannon will be served immediately after with presentation of prizes to follow in the Dugout Bar. Wishing them both the very best for their very special occasion and for their year ahead!!

Ladies, we have a new consignment of club crested polo shirts in a range of trendy colours and club crested gilets which will be on sale this week. We have a small selection of beanie hats still in stock so if you want to procure one, don’t delay!! Our broad range of club clothing in mix and match colours look very smart and make wonderful and useful gifts and are available from the kiosk!!

We have another shake-up in the team rankings with Powerscourt still holding their own in the lead position closely followed by Lahinch and Druid’s Glen chasing their tails!! It’s all to play for between the top two teams, with a close eye on the incoming scores for the next week!! Good luck to the managers and teams in contention and well done to all who have put in a tremendous effort to date!  Closing date for the league is Friday 24th Feb

Teams have now been registered for the Inter Club matchplay events. Please contact our club secretary Miriam if interested in representing your club, players and subs are required.
