JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL

The John McGrath Memorial was a huge success last Wednesday, thanks to the efforts of a large number of people who helped out in so many different ways. So far just over €5,300 has been raised towards the purchase of 3 specialised chairs for the Palliative Care Unit in Dungarvan Hospital. Speaking at the function following the golf, Mary O’Reilly, Assistant Director of Nursing, told us how about the huge difference the three chairs we purchased last year is making to the patients in Palliative Care. They are in constant demand as they provide much needed comfort and allow the patients to get a break from lying in bed. She was thrilled to hear that we would be purchasing three more this year. Thanks to all who made the day such a success, all who played in the competition, and all who contributed to the raffle, (tickets will be on sale for another 2 weeks).  Thanks to the McGrath family, sponsors, and all who helped with catering and everyone who helped out in any way to make the day such a tremendous success and raise money for a very deserving cause.

INTER CLUB TEAMS

BARTON SHIELD

Our gents Barton Shield team under the management of John White took on Bandon GC in Dungarvan on Saturday 15th July. Our boys had a tough match and gave it their all, but had to succumb to a superior side!

Well done boys, you did your best and wishing Bandon GC the very best in their next leg!!

MUNSTER EAST AIG SENIOR FOURSOMES

Our Senior Foursomes team managed by Miriam travelled to Mallow GC on Sat 15th July to play the winners of Bandon/Mallow. On arrival, they were informed that they were playing the Mallow girls. With the weather deteriorating they teed off in mixed conditions, but the wind and squally showers did not deter our ladies who gave it their all!!

They played their hearts out on the front 9 amid extremely cold and windy conditions and kept the game in play. They kept us excited on the back 9 with win’s losses, and halves and eventually came down to a putt on the last for a win to Mallow who played exceptional golf on the day, well done ladies!

Thanks a mill to Miriam and her team for a wonderful golfing experience, you did us proud with your exceptional effort and commitment!! Thanks to the many club members who came to support and to our intrepid reporter Hurricane Elaine who kept all at home on the edge of their seats with her up to the minute broadcasting!!!

The team wishes to express their thanks for all the support and wishing the Mallow ladies every success in their next leg!!

JOHN MCGRATH MEMORIAL CLASSIC

The fundraiser classic was held again this year on Wednesday 12th July over 32 non-stop holes. These fundraiser classics have been run by our club for many years and are always a fantastically co-ordinated event due to the expertise of the men’s club who micro-managed this year’s event!!

It was a fabulous golfing and gourmet experience as the golf had intermittent gourmet stops along the way, finishing with dinner and presentation of prizes. The catering stations both on and off the course were ably assisted by a team of ladies who were ever efficient, helpful and greeted everyone with a smile and a cuppa!!

Thanks a mill to the McGrath family, the organising committee, caterers and BBQ chefs whose input was imperative for the smooth running of the event. Thank you to the members who played, bought raffle tickets and donated to the purchase again this year of 3 specialised chairs for the Palliative Care Unit in Dungarvan Community Hospital. To date €5,300 has been raised with the raffle continuing for another 2 weeks with beautiful hampers to be won, still time left to buy your tickets!!

The Assistant Director of Nursing Mary O’Reilly who was so appreciative of our donation of the 3 chairs last year told us what a difference they make to the very ill patients, will be delighted the addition of 3 new ones this year!

CARE OF GREENS AND BUNKERS

We would like to ask our players to please repair pitch marks on the greens, even if they are not your own!! Also please rake bunkers, now that they are back in play.

HANDICAP COMMITTEE

Our Handicap secretary and committee are meeting on a regular basis to discuss the input from the ladies in accordance to their handicaps. A review will be on-going throughout the year in relation to above decision.

MARKING OF CARDS

Golf Ireland guidelines have stated that all 3 handicaps must be recorded on cards for competition and casual rounds for handicap purposes. To avoid disqualification you must record your h/cap index, playing h/cap and most importantly the course h/cap, all of these are available on the Golf Ireland app and also on screen when you log in for competitions. It is also important not to enter a zero for stableford competitions as it interferes with standard scratch, if you blank a hole just record the shots as the computer will adjust accordingly. All scores must be recorded by the marker and signed in

agreement with the player before being returned no later than 30mins after you finish your round.

NEW MEMBER DEALS

Ladies, if you had ever thought of taking up golf, now is the time to do it, our Lady Captain Rosie and any committee member would be delighted to take out potential members and showcase our beautiful course and unrivalled scenery!! There are great deals on offer for new members and beginners including tuition, please contact our Director of Golf Irene or Brian in the kiosk on 058 44055 for more information.
