Gold Coast Golf Club Notes 16th August 2020
PIERCE PURCELL SHIELD
The Gold Coast played Williamstown in the 3rd round of this year’s Pierce Purcell Shield last Saturday 15th August. We played 3 games away and 2 games at home, both venues teeing off at 3pm. After four and a half hours of golf the result was still unknown. At Williamstown, our first pair were heading down the 19th, when the 2 games behind had finished one a piece. At the same time in the Gold Coast both matches also headed down the 19th. So, at this stage it was one game apiece with 3 games hanging in the balance. The first Gold Coast team eventually won their match on the 21st hole. Then at Williamstown the Gold Coast lost on the 20th hole, making the match 2 games each. Unfortunately our second home pair lost on the 19th, and the match, after putting in a great effort and playing some fantastic golf. Great credit must go to the panel of players who had four Tuesday night sessions in the Gold Coast, two sessions in Williamstown and a challenge match against Cahir Park golf club in preparation for Saturdays match. Best of luck to Williamstown who now progress to the 4th round.
Representing the Gold Coast on Saturday were the following pairings: At Williamstown; Paul Lenihan and John Ahern, John Walsh and Tom Reynolds, Declan Kiely and Michael Whelan, reserve pair were Nicky Dee and Brian Dunbar. At the Gold Coast; Fergal Buttimer and David Hallahan, Richard Walsh and Michael Wall, reserve pair Andy Travers and Marc Power.
CLUB COMMUNICATION
If you are reading these weekly notes from the website, that is good. However, if you give your email address to the kiosk you can receive these notes by email. Also, WhatsApp is being widely used now by the club and members to keep people informed of events and, like last Saturday, provide live updates from competitions. Even from a distance the excitement was palpable, and one had a sense of sharing in the experience at the Gold Coast GC and Williamstown GC. The pictures of the teams were a nice touch, well done to all who contributed.
