Goldcoast Golf Club Notes 14th May 2023

Annual Subscriptions are currently due. Thank you to all members who have already paid. An information email was forwarded to members in March advising of the rates and payment methods etc. If you were not in receipt of an email or your email address has changed please let the office know so we can update our database.  Thank you for your continued support.

Golf Ireland has introduced a new policy whereby Golf Clubs will pay affiliation fees based on membership levels from 1st June.  In respect of this, members who do not have any portion of their membership currently paid risk losing their Golf Ireland affiliation.  To bring you membership up to date please contact the Kiosk without delay.  Thank you for your co-operation.

Our mixed team took to the fairways of the Gold Coast Golf Club yesterday against Clonmel in brilliant sunshine.  It was a hard fought battle to the end with some great matches taking place but when the dust settled the Goldcoast team came out on top.  They really did themselves and the club proud.  We thank the Management of the team Captains Aisling Fennell and John Hallinan and the great supporters who came to cheer on the team.  The next outing will be against Tramore early in June, time and date to be decided. The team was as follows: Neil Dermody/Gillian Cashman, John White/ Leanne Bumster, Alan Darcy/ Martina Corkery, Michael Kavanagh/ Karen Darcy, John Hallinan/ Geraldine Hallinan. Congratulations to you all.

Our very popular Captain Michael Wall will hold his Captains weekend on the weekend of 16th June 2023 with Qualifiers taking place on Friday and Saturday and the final on Sunday the 18th.  The Captains Scramble will be held on Sunday 11th June.  To be eligible to win the Captains Prize you must have returned a min of at least 4 cards from counting competitions in 2022.

As a courtesy to officials checking scorecards in stableford competitions, we would greatly appreciate if members and visitors would record their stableford points opposite gross score on the scorecard. Please also ensure your computer input corresponds with your scorecard to prevent any inaccuracies, many thanks for your cooperation.

Please note the Men’s club policy when playing non-competitive general play rounds that are returned for handicap purposes. A fee of €5 is to be paid at the Kiosk prior to your round or submitted into the scorecard box in an envelope with your name and date when the office is closed or unattended. Members are required to pre-register the round via the Golf Ireland App and following return of the score it must be attested by your marker on their Golf Ireland App. Please return the signed physical scorecard clearly marked General Play as normal into the scorecard box. Members cannot play handicap counting general play rounds on competition days. There is no charge for members playing initial rounds to obtain a club handicap or playing leisurely social golf.

The order of merit winner will now be awarded the car park space previously given to the scratch match play winner. The new tee box on the 12th will be ready for the Captain’s Prize while re-construction is taking place on the 17th the tee box. The new score cards and index changes have been rolled out. Please note par 5 17th for men, and ladies reverting to par 4 12th. Relief will be allowed for all staked trees. Please check with Kiosk for updates on local rules.

Our dress code for the Gold Coast is slacks and polo shirts. Please note sports jerseys, jeans and track suit bottoms are unacceptable on the golf course. Thank you for your adherence.

Our scramble which was scheduled for Thursday evening was postponed due to unseasonal heavy showers which were not conducive to any element of fun!!

However, the presentation of all outstanding prizes including Winter League took place in the Dugout Bar amid a large attendance. Our league sponsor, the Moorings Bar & Restaurant represented by Maria and son Tadhg did the honours of presenting the prizes.

It was a very special occasion as Maria started sponsoring us in 2013 and ongoing for the last 10 years and promised to continue as long as we can play golf. We thank you most sincerely for your continued commitment to our club, it is much appreciated!!

A new Facebook page has been launched by both men’s and ladies clubs, thanks a mill to Leanne who is spearheading the ladies section. Please like and share!!

Wed 17th May

Wed 21st June

Wed 26th July

Wed 16th August

Our first open team event will take place on Wed 17th May kindly sponsored by Comserv. The 3 ball team event will be a champagne scramble format which is a favourite with many golfers. Looking forward to seeing our neighbouring club ladies on the day, bookings are online or contacting Irene or Brian on 058 44055

The midweek golf has proved to be very popular as the weather is improving with the course in outstanding condition!! All members new and longstanding are welcome to join us, and there is no handicap limit. We play a 9 Hole singles each week with the exception of a monthly scramble which is proving very popular with everyone!!

Many thanks to Anne for continuing to organise the event with presentation of the most wonderful prizes each week!!

The Carton Cup team under the management of Bernie were drawn against Cobh GC in the first leg of the tournament and had a great win on home course on Mon 8th May. The return game to Cobh in beautiful sunny conditions on Sat 13th May did not go to our advantage. While our ladies put on a great display, they had to succumb to a superior team. Many thanks to our players, caddies and manager Bernie for taking on the challenge!!

Congrats to Cobh GC and wishing them the very best going forward in the tournament.

Team : Mary Fennell, Aine Campbell, Rita Thompson, Brigid Coffey, Emma Fortune. Reserve : Joan O’Dea

Our foursomes team who had a nail biting victory over Thurles GC take on our neighbours West Waterford in the next leg of the tournament on Sunday 21st May in the Gold Coast GC.

We would like to ask our players to please repair pitch marks on the greens, even if they are not your own!! Also please rake bunkers, now that they are back in play.

Our mixed foursomes team took on Clonmel GC on our home course on Sun 14th May in dry and favourable conditions after the constant drizzle that prevailed over the morning players.

Our team went out to win and left no stone unturned in fighting off a very defiant side!! All matches were fairly even for the first few holes, but soon the cream rose to the top when our side finishes 2 matches on the 15th and the final one on the 17th green amid uproar from the spectators of which there were many!!

The level of golf played by both sides was spectacular and a big thank you to the Clonmel and our own supporters for their decorum on the course at all times!

Congratulations to our team and managers John and Aisling for a brilliant result, and best wishes going forward to the next round!!

TEAM: John White & Leanne Bumster

Neil Dermody & Gillian Cashman

Alan Darcy & Martina Corkery

Michael Kavanagh & Karen Darcy

John Hallinan & Ger Hallinan

Congratulations and best wishes to Gillian Cashman who celebrated her birthday on Sunday while playing textbook golf in our mixed foursomes team!! Well done Gillian on your fab golf and hope you celebrated in style with the team after the event.

Our Handicap secretary and committee are meeting on a regular basis to discuss the input from the ladies in accordance to their handicaps. A review will be on-going throughout the year in relation to above decision.

Ladies, if you had ever thought of taking up golf, now is the time to do it, our Lady Captain Rosie and any committee member would be delighted to take out potential members and showcase our beautiful course and unrivalled scenery!! There are great deals on offer for new members and beginners including tuition, please contact our Director of Golf Irene or Brian in the kiosk on 058 44055 for more information.
