CAPTAINS PRIZE 2025
Our Captains, Brian and Elaine, hosted what can only be described as the weekend of the year. Festivities began on Wednesday evening with the Captains’ Scramble. Members enjoyed a fun round of golf followed by a delicious barbecue, served by our Treasurer-turned-chef Michael Wall, ably assisted by both Captains’ families. There were some excellent scores from all teams, and the winners on the night were Pat Kiely, Deirdre Ruane, Pat Norris, and Ross Kirwan.
On Friday and Saturday, attention turned to the serious business of qualifying for Sunday’s final. Lar Whelan set the pace as clubhouse leader on Friday and he managed to hold onto his lead on Saturday, with strong challenges from Darragh Power and Willie Flavin.
Sunday morning saw the club buzzing with activity as both ladies and gents made their way to assigned tee boxes for the 11am shotgun start. Scoring was tight once again, but when the dust settled, the man from the hills of Castlereagh, Ballymacarbry held his nerve to claim the title. Congratulations to our 2025 Captains’ Prize winner, Lar Whelan. We also extend huge congratulations to Martina Corkery, who claimed the Ladies’ Captains Prize for 2025. A full list of winners is in the results section.
Celebrations continued at the hotel with a wonderful sit-down meal and presentation of prizes. Lady President Mary Fennell spoke very highly of Lady Captain Elaine Nash and her achievements during the year, before the ladies proceeded with their prizegiving.
Next, it was the turn of the men. Club President Roy Ware delivered a glowing tribute to Captain Brian Dunbar, thanking him for his dedication throughout the year. Captain Brian expressed his thanks to kiosk staff Irene and Brian for their support, the hotel staff for their excellent service, and to Rob and the greenkeeping team for the superb condition of the course. He also thanked the McGrath family for their continued support, his wife Mary and family, the Fixtures Committee—John White, Michael Wall, and Bob O’Brien—as well as the entire Men’s Committee. A special word of thanks was reserved for his friend Michael Wall who he described as his mentor.
Captain Brian then proceeded with the prize presentation, bringing to a close a truly memorable weekend.
A sincere thank you to both Captains for your hard work in organising such a successful event. Big shoes to fill next year—enjoy the rest of the golfing season!

CAPTAIN’S WEEKEND
Our Captains, Brian and Elaine started their very special weekend of golf, fun and celebration in glorious sunshine on Wed evening for the Captain’s scramble and BBQ which was a resounding success.
There was a very large entry for the scramble with a very impressive representation from the ladies club. After the 13 holes the members were treated to a fabulous BBQ and refreshments organised and cooked by members of both Brian and Elaine’s family. Apparently, the feedback from the diners was 5 star from presentation, quality and service, well done catering team!!
There were some magnificent scores returned for the scramble with birdies and an eagle on one card in a bid to outdo the competition. It was a fabulous night of fun, food, golf and great company, thanks to the organisers and all involved in making it a memorable occasion.
MARTINA WINS LADY CAPTAINS PRIZE
Qualifying rounds took place on Friday and Saturday again in glorious sunshine with some fabulous scores returned and making it very hard to decipher who would hold it over both days to claim the trophy!! There was a shotgun start at 11am for qualifiers on Sunday with all eyes on the leaders going out and especially coming in. The excitement was mounting untill the last fourball returned and the scores could finally be calculated.
Presentation of Prizes took place in the Gold Coast Hotel after the dinner had been served to a packed function room. Our Lady President Mary opened the ladies proceedings by welcoming everyone and spoke about the input of work by our Lady Captain, committee and members.
Presentation of prizes took place with great anticipation of who won the coveted trophy, Mairead who won it last year was pipped by 1 shot to concede to Martina as this year’s winner with a resounding applause.
Martina spoke of her retirement 3 weeks ago and how she was denied the chance of playing for many years due to work commitments. She was delighted to accept the beautiful crystal trophy and said she would have to re-arrange her cabinet to accommodate it!
Congratulations to all who featured over the weekend and to those who didn’t, there’s always next year!
Best wishes to Brian, his committee and all the prize winners and especially Lar Whelan who won his wonderful prize.
Elaine spoke graciously about her second year in the role and thanked everyone who helped her to make it a great weekend. There were numerous people to thank from the ladies who baked delicious treats, manned the table over the 2 days and served food and refreshments on the 10th tee. The beautiful floral displays were provided by our resident florist Isobel who leaves no stone unturned in striving for perfection!!
A big thank you to the ladies who input all the scores on Sunday as they arrived in which speeded up the entire process, there was a concerted effort by everyone to achieve a quick result. Well done team and well done Lady Captain on a successful and marvelous weekend.
